Light Yagami VS Walter White

"He who tells a lie is not sensible of how great a task he undertakes; for he must be forced to invent twenty more to maintain that one."

-Alexander Pope

Light Yagami, otherwise known as Kira, the wielder of the Death Note and God of a new world.

Walter White, otherwise known as Heisenberg, legendary drug kingpin and the one who knocks.

There are people among us that are extraordinarily gifted, intelligent individuals who are able to contribute greatly to society. However, their talents are not always used for the right causes, yet their vanity may convince them that their acts are only being done for the greater good. After all, they are at the top of the food chain. Who can tell them otherwise? And yet, after committing these heinous acts for so long, maybe they are no longer righteous. Maybe they've become heinous themselves. Or maybe they always were. When the legendary Kira and Heisenberg butt heads, God vs the Devil, who will come out on top? And who will face the ultimate humility in a DEATH BATTLE?

Before We Start

Light and Walter are some of the most unique characters put under the lens of VS analysis due to how they rely on their smarts far more than their physical dominance to win fights. As such, we as a team have decided that an alternative form of rules should be put into place in order to determine which combatant is superior. The stipulations are as follows:

  1. Light and Walter will not be placed in the same location, as most fights start. They will both know about Kira and Heisenberg, and their goal would be to either expose them, leading to their arrest, or just kill them outright.

  2. Light and Walter reside in the same city as each other. This city shares a police department that contains both the DEA workers of Breaking Bad as well as the Task Force present in Death Note. The collective police will be aware of both Kira and Heisenberg.

  3. Light and Walter will predominantly speak and read English. Though Light’s native language is Japanese, he takes English classes and is fluent enough to understand English wordplay, meaning that it’s reasonable for him to speak English naturally.

  4. While the “battle” takes place, Kira and Heisenberg will still continue their operations of vigilante justice and drug manufacturing respectively. This way, they cannot camp out from potentially revealing information about themselves. Of course, they can still attempt to hide their tracks.

  5. Light and Walter will still attempt to evade imprisonment, even if that means removing an opportunity to expose/kill the other. However, they can forgo their own safety or identity only if they believe they have no other options.

  6. Known associates of them will be allowed, to a certain extent. This is to add further depth to the matchup, as well as because these two characters both use their connections with notable people to further their own goals in their series.

Also, this blog will contain spoilers for Death Note and Breaking Bad. Watch/read them both before continuing.

Background

Light Yagami

"I am the killer, and the new God of the New World. I am the way, the one who protects the natural order. This is fact. Now, I have become Justice! I am the hope of the world!"

Born to Soichiro and Sachiko Yagami, Light Yagami was the #1 Rated Student of the Daikoku Private Academy. A good kid at heart, Light yearned for something more… interesting than the monotonous way life had given him up to that point. That is until he noticed a notebook on the grounds at his school, the Death Note. However, believing it to be a simple prank, he didn’t use it.

A week would pass before being confronted by the monster who dropped the book in the first place, Ryuk. The shinigami was simply bored with life not dissimilar to Light, and is impressed when Light is revealed to have already been using the death note to kill 12 people in secrecy. Light had grown accustomed to the book’s power and is intent on using it to forge a world free of the rotten and the deplorable. Under a new name, Light will create this perfect world, with Kira as their god…

Walter White

"I am not in danger, Skyler. I am the danger. A guy opens his door and gets shot and you think that of me? No, I am the one who knocks."

Walter Hartwell White Sr. lives at 308 Negra Arroyo Lane in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is a mild-mannered high school chemistry teacher living with his wife and two children. He is a dying man, diagnosed with lung cancer shortly after his 50th birthday. He is also the most notorious drug kingpin the country has ever known. How did this happen? A man of his intellect and status should be an upstanding member of society, not peddling crystal meth. Well, it all started with that cancer diagnosis.

Walter White was a decent man, he loved his family and took pride in science. He may have been working a second job at a car wash, and sure, he may have sold his stock in a now billion-dollar company that he co-founded for a few thousand bucks back in college, and maybe his colleagues are highly acclaimed professors while he’s stuck lecturing snotty teenagers… you get the point.

Under the surface, he was miserable. He was meant for better things. But now the lung cancer would kill him before he got the chance. That is, until his DEA agent brother-in-law, Hank Schrader, took him on a ride-along, and he witnessed an old student of his, one Jesse Pinkman, escaping in the chaos. He’d later track Pinkman down, and in exchange for his silence, he would help him get into the meth business, to truly do something great and make enough money for his family before he checked out. Thrusting himself into the criminal underworld, he took up the mantle of Heisenberg.

Light Yagami

Death Note

The titular book of the series, the Death Note is an item responsible for a vast majority of the deaths featured throughout the series. However, it comes with an immense amount of rules; far too many to list in a regularly sized analysis. Some notable stipulations to this debate are listed below, in chronological order:

  • Rule I: The human whose name is written in this note shall die.

    • This note will not take effect unless the writer has the person's face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.

    • If the cause of death is written within the next 40 seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen.

  • Rule VII: One page taken from the Death Note, or even a fragment of the page, contains the full effects of the note.

    • The instrument to write with can be anything, e.g. cosmetics, blood, etc. as long as it can write directly onto the note and remains as legible letters.

  • Rule XIII: You may lend the Death Note to another person while maintaining its ownership. Subletting it to yet another person is possible, too.

    • The borrower of the Death Note will not be followed by a god of death. The god of Death always remains with the owner of the Death Note. Also, the borrower cannot trade the eyesight of the god of death.

  • Rule XXVI: Even though only one name is written in the Death Note, if it influences and causes other humans that are not written in it to die, the victim's cause of death will be a heart attack.

  • Rule XXXI: The number of pages of the Death Note will never run out.

  • Rule XXXV: If a Death Note owner accidentally misspells a name four times, that person will be free from being killed by the Death Note. However, if they intentionally misspell the name four times, the Death Note owner will die.

  • Rule XXIX: You cannot kill humans with less than 12 minutes of life left (in human calculations).

  • Rule LXII: Once the victim's name, cause of death and situation of death have been written down in the Death Note, this death will still take place even if that Death Note or the part of the note in which it has been written is destroyed, for example, burned into ashes, before the stated time of death.

All of the rules of the Death Note can be found here.

One very notable aspect of the Death Note is that users can actually manipulate the actions of their victims before death to do what they want. Light in particular has used it to get information he otherwise wouldn't have access to. However, this aspect of the Death Note has limits. Whatever the victim does must be reasonable or possible for that person to do.

The Death Note is very durable, being able to rip and tear while still maintaining its functionality. However, burning the book or otherwise affecting it in order to make the pages illegible completely invalidates it. It is a notebook, after all. Several prior users of Death Notes have burned their notes in order to avoid temptation, though obviously Light isn’t one of these figures.

Mechanical Pencil

Due to Light’s method of killing being so reliant on writing, Light keeps a writing utensil on him at all times. His tool of choice is a mechanical pencil, since it has the ability to erase unintentional mistakes as well as the ability to rely on store-bought lead rather than needing to sharpen. Due to Light’s intelligence, it can be assumed that he keeps his pencil full of lead at nearly all times.

Light has also used pens in the past, though he is predominantly seen using a mechanical pencil.

Wristwatch

Light’s wristwatch is more than it seems on the surface. While also a tool utilized by Light for telling the time in order to plan his killings, the watch also contains a small, collapsible drawer within the side. Light always keeps a small fragment of the Death Note inside this drawer in any instance where he would need to instantly kill somebody nearby, do it discreetly, or in case he doesn't have the Death Note with him at that time.

Pork Pie Hat

Heisenberg drip

Phosphine Gas

Phosphine Gas is an extremely lethal gas composed of red phosphorus and moisture in the presence of heat. A single whiff of it can cause death. Walter not only knows how to make it, but is able to reproduce it even under dire circumstances to kill others. As such, Walter also knows how to circumvent himself being affected by the gas.

Mercury Fulminate

Walter can carry an entire bag of fulminated mercury, an extremely explosive substance. A single crystal of it is powerful enough to blow up Tuco's headquarters, and Walt has been able to use mercury fulminate at close range.

Pipe Bomb

Walter White has shown to be capable of creating highly potent explosives, which he has hidden in locations where he expects his opponent to arrive. These bombs have shown to be powerful enough to encompass an entire room. He has used such pipe bombs before in a very deadly face off.

Poisons

Another method of trap that Walter has shown to use before is the usage of poisons. Most notably, he is able to create ricin, an incredibly lethal poison. Only a small amount is required to kill, and although it takes a few days to kill, Walter prefers it to other poisons because it leaves behind very little trace and can be easily overlooked in an autopsy. Alternatively, Walt has also used lily of the valley, a less lethal, but still poisonous plant that has symptoms similar to ricin. He can use this if he does not wish for the affected to die.

Bugs

Walter has on multiple occasions bugged certain people with devices, such as GPS trackers to know someone's location, or audio recorders to listen in to people when they don't believe they are being heard.

Guns

If Walter White is forced into a direct confrontation, he is prepared with the use of firearms of which he has owned multiple of throughout the series, mostly consisting of smaller revolvers and pistols. Examples of guns that Walt has owned include the Smith & Wesson 4500 pistol, Ruger LCR, Smith & Wesson Model 442 and the Smith & Wesson M945.

Mounted Machine Gun

His most powerful firearm, Walter owns an M60 machine gun with 100 rounds and over a thousand meters of range. It's bullets have cleaved clean through walls and not lost any lethality. Walter is able to mount this machine gun onto his trunk to hide its presence and can fire it remotely with just his car keys.

Abilities

Light Yagami

Deceit

Light is a gifted liar and manipulator, often taking careful consideration whenever he interacts with others. Every statement he makes is carefully thought out in order to arouse the least possible suspicion of potentially being Kira.

As such, Light has an incredible sense of control over his emotions. He can shift from innocent and well-meaning to murderous and dramatic at the drop of a hat. He uses this control over his body language to trick those around him into either getting off his back, fully believing in his cause, or outright being intimidated by him.

Keikaku*

*Translator’s Note: keikaku means plan.

Light is an absolute mastermind when it comes to concocting his plans in advance. He’s taken several precautions in order to continue his work in case of a sudden hindrance, such as writing deaths weeks in advance and hiding cameras within potato chip bags to avoid being seen watching the news.

This culminated in his ultimate plan to kill L, the anonymous detective trailing him throughout a majority of the series. He used an experimental method of mind control to wipe all memories of the Death Note from his own mind, infiltrated the investigation team to lead the charge in capturing Kira, and literally became L’s successor before having one of his partners in crime pull the trigger on L’s life.

Shinigami Eyes

The Shinigami Eyes are a special ability given to those who seek to delve deeper into the machinations of the Shinigami’s work. They are gained through making a deal with the Shinigami associated with the user’s Death Note. In exchange for half of the user’s natural life, their eyesight is enhanced beyond mortal means, allowing them to see the full name and natural time of death of anybody they can see the face of.

After making the deal, the permanent deduction to the user’s life span is always in effect; losing the Death Note or any sort of contact with the Shinigami in question will not undo the effect.

Though Light never actually made this deal in canon due to its benefits conflicting with his ideals, the offer is always available to him.

Mu

Though not technically an ability of Light's or the Death Notes, it is important to make clear what death in Death Note, and the victims of the Death Note implies. In the world of Death Note, when someone dies, they do not go to an afterlife, be reborn or have any spiritual presence after. Instead, they completely cease to exist - they go to Mu, meaning an incorrect, or redundant basis, because they don't go anywhere. Everyone is equal under death, and no one can come back to life after they die.

Walter White

Chemistry

Walter White is an expert chemist, having contributed to the creation of what is now a billion dollar company, as well as creating methamphetamine with an over 99% purity rate - a rate so pure that it upended the entire meth dealing market, making him an extremely valuable individual, thus making him hard for drug dealers and kingpins to kill, and the greatest meth cook in America. He has actually used his knowledge on chemistry to get himself through multiple difficult situations, even being able to create a car battery out of spare materials after being tired out in the middle of a desert after an entire day.

Criminal Mastery

Despite going into the criminal underworld as just a high-school chemistry teacher, Heisenberg has managed his criminal career very well, and has become one of the most notorious criminals in the entire nation. Not only has he toppled multiple powerful kingpins, gangs and empires, but he also managed to leave effectively zero evidence implicating his actions behind - except for his money, which he has also managed to keep very well hidden. He also has no qualms with killing associates who may become a liability to his operations, and can arrange to have jailed persons who have been affiliated with him killed fairly quickly, just for the possibility that they might say something that could implicate him. In addition, Walter knows how to get rid of a body without leaving a single trace behind.

Manipulation

Walter is definitely no stranger to lying, and he would soon find he'd have to do a lot of it to stay alive. However, Walt is an expert at manipulating people, be it through their emotions or personal interests, into doing exactly what he wants. He has orchestrated intricate schemes and events into a situation that almost always ends in his favor, which is what made him so difficult to kill. He has even been able to manipulate hardened criminals and other incredibly intelligent individuals before, and is willing to go to extreme lengths to accomplish this, such as seriously endangering his own life or even poisoning a child. Walter White's ability to manipulate people and events may be one of his most dangerous assets. As Jesse says, he is smarter than you. He is luckier than you.

Associates

Light Yagami

Ryuk

“I didn’t choose you. Don’t you see this is all just an accident? You actually thought you were chosen because you’re so smart or something? Don’t be so vain. It just happened to fall around here and you just happened to pick it up, and that’s all there is to it.”

The Shinigami are a species of gods that live beyond the mortal world. Using their notebooks of death, they write the names of those who draw near their final breaths. This dance of life and death fuels the Shinigami’s lifespan, allowing them to live forever as long as their duties are fulfilled.

However, being a god can get boring.

Ryuk, a Shinigami, decided that he wanted to spice things up a bit in the Human World. So, he dropped a stolen Death Note from the heavens for a mortal to pick up and use. That mortal just so happened to be Light Yagami.

Completely invisible and intangible to the outside world, Ryuk is both the angel and the devil sitting over Light’s shoulder. Though he rarely ever directly helps or hinders Light, he is always there to comment on the situation in one way or another. As the de facto owner of Light’s Death Note, he is obligated to inform Light how it works.

Ryuk is bonded to the Death Note, meaning that if the note ever comes into the possession of somebody besides Light, Ryuk would appear before them just as he did with Light.

If push comes to shove and Light’s life is on the line, Ryuk could theoretically intercept and save Light from death, though it would come at the sacrifice of Ryuk’s life. However, knowing how low of a regard Ryuk holds Light in (even to the point of being the one to kill him), it’s basically impossible for this to become a plausible reality.

Misa Amane

“Yeah, but… to me, Light is more important than the world.”

After witnessing the man who murdered her family get struck down at the stand by Kira, Misa Amane became obsessed with the idea of Kira. This obsession caused her to draw the attention of other deities from the Shinigami Realm, most notably two Shinigami named Gelus and Rem. During an encounter with an armed stalker, Gelus gave his life to protect Misa, leaving his Death Note behind for Misa to use. Rem gifted the Note to Misa and watched over her from that time forward.

After discovering Light and discovering that he is Kira, Misa fell madly in love with Light to an obsessive degree. She would happily carry out Light’s orders using her own Death Note, placing herself under suspicion of being the Second Kira. Her loyalty to Light is eternal, as she threw herself off of a building after learning of Light’s death.

Eventually, Misa would make the Shinigami Eye Deal with Rem, granting her the ability to know anybody’s name upon seeing their face. She used this ability to take Light’s place as Kira for five years before Light was able to return to his ways.

Teru Mikami

“There is no reason for me to question. God is absolute. My job is to do as God wishes.”

Another one who worships Kira, Teru Mikami takes up Galus' notebook to act as a "hand of Kira". He absolutely detests crime and will stop at nothing to create the world Kira desires. Being a criminal prosecutor, he knows his way around the justice system to add even more of those disgusting criminals on their deathbeds. However they differ in that Mikami is more interested in killing those who already have criminal records regardless of crime status rather than killing sinners to prevent more crime.

Mikami has a clockwork schedule, the same every day regardless of the day, and has shown to write an entire page of names in a day, a thing even Light is somewhat concerned over. Also like Misa, he made a deal for Shinigami Eyes.

Kiyomi Takada

"You're the only man I've ever actually admired… and now to find out that you're Kira… it's too amazing for words…"

Kiyomi Takada was a brief girlfriend of Light's who he had used during his later reign as Kira as a spokesperson for his cause. As a famous spokesperson on the television network NHN, her job is to convey the will of Kira to the masses, and turn public opinion to his side. By the end of the series, Kira's influence was so great that he was able to utilize massive crowds of Kira supporters, and even the police seemed to act in his interest.

Japanese Task Force

Led by both L and his very own father, Soichiro Yagami, the Japanese Task Force is responsible for handling major criminal threats. Ironically, it was conceived to combat Kira, but Light himself ended up leading the operation after the death of L. The task force consists of several highly regarded police officers from the NPA that have been tasked to handle the Kira Case. After Light was revealed to be Kira, the task force was disbanded.

Walter White

Jesse Pinkman

“You either run from things, or you face them, Mr. White.”

Jesse Pinkman was a student of Walter’s, back when he was in high school. He did poorly and led himself down a path of drugs and degeneracy, though he was never an evil person. Although he started out as fairly incompetent, he has grown into a very dependable ally, able to recreate Walt's formula as well as accomplish something for him when he is unavailable at that location. Walt has managed to avoid death thanks to Jesse's aid multiple times before.

Saul Goodman

"If you're committed enough, you can make any story work. I once told a woman I was Kevin Costner, and it worked...because I believed it.".

Saul Goodman (not his real name) is Walter and Jesse’s criminal defense lawyer. He’s a smooth-talking con man who makes light of the justice system in order to get his clients off and receive a big payday. He doesn’t represent them publicly, of course, but his business is a good front to stash their money. What makes Saul particularly helpful in this scenario is how connected he is. Saul can make contact with any of the numerous criminals that he associates with, two of them being particularly notable as his A Team: Huell Babineaux and Patrick Kuby.

Mike Ehrmantraut

"I've known good criminals and bad cops, bad priests, honorable thieves-you can be on one side of the law or the other, but if you make a deal with somebody, you keep your word."

Michael Ehrmantraut is a former beat cop working with Walter and Jesse, and a former employee for Gus. Mike is incredibly skilled at "clean up", meaning he's an expert assassin and can find and kill people even if they have moved out of town. He also has a lot of experience in the business and can prove to be quite the asset, if his relationship with Walt doesn't get too strained…

Hank Schrader

"If you're gonna bring a gun, you gotta bring enough gun."

Hank Schrader is married to Skyler White’s sister, making him Walter’s brother-in-law. For the majority of the series, Hank is unaware of Walt's criminal activities, and would not hesitate to attempt to arrest him if he were to find out, but outside of that, Hank is a skilled DEA agent that often enlists the help of Walt for his investigations, which Walt uses to his advantage. Walt can also bug his office with recorders, if he wanted additional information. Despite not working with Heisenberg, Hank has actually proven to be a help for Walt, even if not intentionally - such as when he killed Tuco.

Lydia Rodarte-Quayle

"You're tying up loose ends, and I don't want to be one of them. Once I give you that list, I've served my purpose, and then maybe I'm just one more person who knows too much."

Lydia is the Head of Logistics at Madrigal Electromotive GmbH, and a former partner for Gus. Allied with Walt, she is able to provide chemicals and other substances to actually make the meth that Walt requires, and the best way to acquire them, and distribute them to several areas - even across Europe. While this may not seem very useful in this scenario, Walt building his empire and resources is important as it allows him more options, resources and territory.

Jack's Gang

Thanks to his connections to Todd Alquist, who looks up to Walter, Walt has had access to the help of Todd's uncle, Jack Welker and his gang of neo-nazis. They are a group of assassins with military grade equipment that can help to kill anyone Walt asks them to, and their prison connections allowed them to kill ten prison inmates who Walt feared had information leading back to him, within a two minute timeframe.

Ed Galbraith

"If you believe that you can pull on people’s heartstrings, you should take your chances with the police. From where I sit, you made your own luck. As did your former partner. As did your lawyer. You said it yourself, a deal’s a deal."

On the outside, Ed Galbraith is just an ordinary, old owner of a small vacuum cleaner company. However, if you call and say you need a dust filter for a Hoover Max Extract® 60 Pressure Pro™, and he can make an entirely new life, new identity for you. Ed possesses the skills necessary to completely alter one's appearance and identity, and then send them to some far away state where they will never be found by law enforcement or anyone else. However, Ed is a very careful man, and as such you only get one shot to use his services. If you miss that opportunity, you won't get another chance.

Weaknesses

Light Yagami

Light Yagami is incredibly intelligent, but don't mistake his giftedness for perfection. He has made several mistakes during his run as Kira, and he is massively prideful to a fault, leading to his overconfidence in his abilities and ultimate downfall. Light has, quite literally, a god complex. In addition, the Death Note itself has limitations, although Light has managed to mostly work around them.

Walter White

Walt has very glaring and obvious issues. To start with the obvious, he is a fifty year old diagnosed with cancer. While his cancer has gone into remission, it did return eventually and it can hamper his abilities, meaning he may be working on a time limit. To add to that, while he has managed to destroy almost every piece of evidence linking him to any crime, he left his money untouched. While this could be partially out of his own greed, or need to send it to his family, it is mostly because of Walt's massive ego. He wants to leave some kind of an impact behind when he is gone, and his need to make something of himself has created the mess he found himself in throughout the series.

Summary

Light Yagami

"I've won."

Advantages:

  • Better individual detective skills, meaning it would be easier for Light to discover how to confront Heisenberg rather than the other way around

  • Works on a larger scale

  • Better at organizing and carrying out massive plans

  • The Death Note is unlike anything Walter has ever had to deal with

  • Acquiring the Shinigami Eyes would immediately reveal Heisenberg’s true identity if he saw him in person

    • However, Light would likely never willingly make the Shinigami Eye Deal as it goes against his philosophy

  • Closest associates will die for Light’s cause

  • Better connections with law enforcement

Disadvantages:

  • Younger and less educated

  • Lacks any means of defending himself in close quarters combat

  • Associates and organization are generally less professional

  • Requires Walter’s real name and face in order to use the Death Note on him

  • Less versatile set of tools to use

  • On Netflix (derogatory)

Walter White

"I won."

Advantages:

  • Older, wiser, and more educated

  • Associates are far more physically dangerous and packing more raw firepower

  • Usage of a pseudonym makes it much more difficult for Light to target him

  • Wider array of resources and tools to use

  • Kept himself far more hidden to the point of only having one person figure out his identity

    • That person was his brother-in-law who had information exclusive to his family that the JTF wouldn’t be able to replicate

  • Far more experienced and well equipped for a direct confrontation

  • Has shown more instances of quick thinking during immediately dangerous situations

  • Networth

  • On Netflix (complimentary)

Disadvantages:

  • Terminal cancer means that he’s on a time limit

  • Has never had to deal with anything quite as supernatural the Death Note

  • Not as much experience with exposing another person's identity as Light is

  • Weaker connections with law enforcement

  • Less experience being Heisenberg

  • Happy Birthday songs

Verdicts

tmk

So I've had to take a bit of a walk before writing this verdict, because I'm not quite sure where to begin here. To start, I feel I owe an explanation to the people that are outside of my immediate friend circle on why exactly it is you are reading a Death Battle fan blog on Light Yagami from Death Note vs Walter White from Breaking Bad. But before I do that, I want to make something clear about these blogs.

When I'm thinking of blogs to make, the biggest key factor to me is if the matchup can generate an interesting discussion or not. The first one I did, Doomsday vs 682, is a very good example of this. For a long time it has remained this very intriguing thought experiment, and I really wanted to participate in a blog about it, so I made my own. After watching Breaking Bad, I've grown to really like the idea of Light vs Walt, and I wanted to do a blog on a less conventional sort of fight. Of course, it has far more merit than just that.

A student and a teacher, originally really intelligent but normal people who get into criminal activity that they justify as being done for the greater good, even though it is actually for their own ego and pride, wanting to make themselves something greater than they actually are. They take an alias and become extremely notorious criminals who manipulate people to get their way and use their intelligence to beat out other people, they both have to lie extensively to hide their identity while their criminal careers destroy the lives of their friends and family, which includes someone who is involved in law enforcement that Light and Walt have tk "help" to derail their investigation. Additionally, both series share a common theme on the value of life, the justifiability of taking one etc. For contrasts, Light wishes to be the God of a new world, while Walt has famously been called the devil by Jesse, and while they are both incredibly prideful, Light's pride bred into his overconfidence in his own abilities and seeing others as not being even close to him, whereas Walt's pride often comes out as a way to prove his own worth when everyone in his life underestimates him and doesn't give him very much worth.

The two parallel so well off of eachother that I've just grown to love this mu and the dynamic behind it. I've seen people suggest other possible ideas, such as Light vs Johan and Walt vs Tony Soprano, but I think this matchup takes the most interesting elements of them and analyzes them in a way that I find to be intriguing.

Anyways, with that out of the way, who wins in this blogs scenario? Well I've done a lot of thinking regarding this and it's not a simple answer. Although this is an "Intelligence battle", I don't believe it can be solved by just arguing who is smarter than the other, which is a bit of an unquantifiable metric considering that both of them are shown to be incredibly intelligent and can create elaborate plans/manipulate people. However, I will say that Light works on a generally larger scale than Walt does, going up against people that are called the greatest detectives in the world, and his plots seem to be generally more intricate, or convoluted, depending on who you ask. In addition to that, Light has also been doing this for longer than Walter has. However, despite that, Walter is older and generally has more life experience than Light, and thus isn't as naive as Yagami can be at times. And while Kira is an international concern, a lot of that is also due to just how enigmatic the Death Notes capabilities are. There isn't really a "greatest detective" in the world of Breaking Bad, but Walter is still likely the most intelligent person in a circle of genius criminal masterminds whose influence spans over the nation and law enforcement much more experienced than Walt himself, and Walter has still had some pretty big brain plays before. The aforementioned advantages for Light aren't bad by any means, but I don't think you can prove they are significant enough to net him a win by itself.

So if trying to find out who is more intelligent isn't enough to decide who wins, what else is there? Well I think it would be a good idea to walk through the circumstances of the match itself and see what would be their likeliest courses of action, as well as their actual options. I imagine it would start with Light being fairly confident he could catch Heisenberg, maybe a little excited to have another "game", whereas Walter wouldn't know what the fuck to do at first, having to deal with a supernatural mass murderer that can kill anyone whenever. I mentioned earlier that one of Light's advantages throughout the series is how enigmatic the capabilities of the Death Note actually are, so can Walter figure out how it works? I'd wager he would be able to. While it is true that a big reason L was able to figure out the limitations of the Death Note was because he had confidential police information, Walter has his own big piece of evidence that will help him here: himself. Why doesn't Kira just immediately kill Heisenberg? I believe that Walt is smart enough to put two and two together and deduce that Kira either needs a name or a face, or both, to kill.

Knowing that doesn't exactly help Walt figure out that Light is Kira, but it does allow him to act accordingly when dealing with him. As for Light, he's going to have a tough time getting useful information on Heisenberg. The guy is a pro at covering his tracks, and is willing to kill people just for the possibility that they might reveal his identity. Light may have better connections to law enforcement, but not only is it an entirely different department than what investigates Heisenberg, he's not a police officer. He's part of the JTF, which specifically targets Kira. The only way I can think of that he could get them to be of much help here would be if he were to convince them that Kira is Heisenberg, or they are connected, but that doesn't actually help him find the identity of someone who leaves behind 0 evidence. Luckily for Light, he's dealt with such opponents before, and knows exactly how to find them: get close to them.

Light's actual reason for joining the JTF was trying to get closer to L, who left no leads otherwise. L has even spoken to this before, where if you have no evidence, you must get closer to them. I think this is the most likely course of action he could take and it has precedent in his series, but what does that entail? Is Light going to be cooking some blue sky just to kill Walt? While that would be incredibly funny, you don't need to literally manufacture meth to work for Heisenberg, as there are other ways you could potentially prove useful to him. However, I should note that this is a more difficult task than it seems. Not only would Light have to find a way to contact him, but he would obviously be very suspicious of anyone attempting to engage him - especially under the current circumstances. This could very well backfire on Light, as Walt then could have a somewhat direct lead on Kira. It is a very dangerous game he would have to play, and I do think it's possible for him to achieve this because he is very good at being deceptive, I don't think it's the most reliable. Worth noting however, I did consider the possibility of Walt himself attempting this, but given that Light keeps much less people close to Kira and runs less organized of an operation, it would be exceedingly difficult for him in comparison.

If we removed that scenario, which might diverge into a lot of unprovable hypotheticals, then Light and Walt are going to be left with very little to work with. After that, we are going to be left with two attributes to analyze: options and characteristics. Basically, the resources that they possess in relation to how they can be used in their favor, and their personal behavior.

I think one of Walt's biggest advantages here is that is able to kill Light regardless of if he knows his identity or not, what with his usage of pipe bombs and poisons and the such. If Walter could predict a location for Kira to travel to, he could rig the place to kill him, whereas Light does not have such options, at least directly. Walter has also used bugs, including GPS trackers and audio recorders before, while Light has not, giving him better options for actually gathering information. On that front, Light could potentially use the Death Note to have an associate of Walt write or otherwise confess Heisenberg's name before they die, if Light could find one. However, he'd have very little guarantee that he would be able to actually see it, and Walt has shown to be willing to kill others just for the possibility they might confess his identity, which he's able to do in a timely manner.

Obviously, Walter has much more direct resources than Light does, but Light has an ace in the hole: the shinigami eyes. It is debatable whether or not Light would ever make the deal in this scenario, however he can use other people who already have, namely Misa and Mikami. Using such associates to camp out at an area to kill someone is a tactic that Light has used twice against Near, and if Walt and Light were drawn to the same location, Walt doesn't have an easy answer to it. One way he could counter it would be by, before he arrives, sending out a "scout"- Jesse, Mike, even someone from Jack's Gang if he is supposed to go to a location, and wants to make sure that they "clean it out". If they find and remove such accomplices, then they are taken out of the equation. If Misa or Mikami kills them, then Walt would know that they haven't responded back to him, and thus not go. This would go the same for patrolling the area in this hypothetical meet up.

I'd say Walt seems to have the advantage in regards to resources, but what about their behaviors? Well, Walter is generally pretty subdued in his criminal activities, while Light's whole plan revolves around getting Kira as much notoriety as possible, that way people will be too scared to commit crimes. Light can create very intricate plans, however Walt can also think on the spot to get him out of imminently impossible situations, whereas Light can be prone to acting out of frustration from time to time. Both of them have a massive ego that can and has been taken advantage of, however they are not the same. Their pride, while similar in some ways, works in opposing directions which can majorly effect this scenario.

Light thinks of himself as a God, and as such can be really overconfident in his abilities, underestimating others which ultimately resulted in his failure and demise. Walter, meanwhile, has been underestimated by everyone in his life - including underground criminals, and knows how to use this to his advantage to end up proving himself and his worth. Walter had moved to an entirely different state with a new identity, and was ready to turn himself in to the police. However, when his pride and worth was attacked by the Schwartzes on TV, it motivated him to go back to ABQ and tie up every lose end, going out on his own terms - unlike Light, whose pride had caused him to lose against Near. This attribute alone is kind of what ended up pushing me into Walt's corner, and it's a very thematic one.

To be fair, a lot of things surrounding this matchup has question marks surrounding them. What if Light did what he did against the bus hijacker to Walt and had him touch a piece of the Death Note and see a shinigami? Will he have a heart attack out of sheer shock? Or will he just stand right there, in his tighty Walter whities? I don't have the answer to that. However, even after trying to argue for Light, I fail to see how Walter doesn't have the advantage on a grander scale. Walter simply has the better tools, resources and circumstances compared to Light, whose majority of win conditions seem to me to be much more circumstantial. Even if Light were smarter, you can't really prove it is enough to overcome his disadvantages in other, more tangible areas. I have no doubt that, in some circumstances, Light could make some genius master plan that completely overwhelms Walter and allows him to win, but more often than not it seems that Heisenberg has the greater overall advantage and utility.

Light Yagami is incredibly gifted and intelligent, not to mention a very dangerous individual, but Walter is the danger. Looks like Light has his death ABQued, with a Heisenberger, and a side of shinigami fr-eyes. I don't know what I was going for there. Uhhhhhhhh, the winner is Walter White.

“Killblog solos both ez”

Hello, fellow dipshits who find some sort of fascination with determining which fictional character can punch harder than the other. TMK was so kind to bring me onto this blog in order to discuss what I think is one of the most unique matchups I think Death Battle would be willing to do: good ol’ Light Yagami, the God of the New World, against Walter White, the One Who Knocks. With titles like that, you’d expect these two to be powerhouses, right?

Well, you’re kind of right.

A battle of the minds, this one is! And, oh boy, is this a breath of fresh air. No longer are we shackled by inane nerd concepts like “Attack Potency” and “Durability Negation” and “Not Taking A Shower for Three Weeks.” Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to get hypothetical.

So, given the circumstances, who’d be more likely to take it home? It’s not as cut and dry as you may think.

Both combatants (is it really right to call them combatants in this situation?) are skilled in many ways, but the way that this match is to be determined is to take a careful look at their track records in the past, how well they cover their footsteps, and, most importantly, how likely they are to find out more information on the other as possible.

Allow me to address the win condition real quick: there is no way in hell that this is ending with an arrest. Light sees criminals like Walter as a blight on society and would be thrilled to kill a kingpin such as him. Walter’s not exactly one to turn others into the police (as long as it doesn’t benefit him more than killing them), so he’d be more than likely to resort to violence rather than a peaceful solution.

So let’s work backwards: start each character with nothing, then slowly add in all of the details as we press forward.

If it were to come down to a direct one-on-one standoff, I believe that Walter would be able to take it with relative ease. Despite the usefulness of the Death Note, it takes a good few seconds to write somebody’s name down in it, which would give Walt more than enough time to either tackle Light to the ground, gun him down with one of the several firearms he’s wielded across the series, or use some sort of chemical reaction to blow up the entire battleground.

Being directly in front of the person he’s about to kill is the situation in which Light struggles the most. It’s how he died, after all. He often tries to write names as far away from his targets as possible. So, Light could just sit in his room and eat a potato chip as he writes Walt’s name in the Death Note, right?

Well, not really. The rules of this match state that Light doesn’t know Walter’s name, and Walt uses a pseudonym in order to conceal his identity. This makes things trickier for Light.

There are a few possible ways for Light to go from here. Let’s talk about them.

Plan A: Take the Shinigami Eye Deal

It’s certainly a possibility for Light to take the Shinigami Eye Deal with Ryuk. While that still leaves the matter of finding Walt in person in order to learn his name without getting immediately filled with bullets, it would allow Light to bypass the Heisenberg pseudonym entirely and kill Walter. However, I believe that Light, especially with the given ruleset, would never take the Eye Deal.

The reason why he didn’t in canon is because he wanted enough time on Earth to pass righteous judgment on everybody who opposed him. Since he fully intends on continuing to purge the guilty after dealing with Walt, taking the Eye Deal would rob him of valuable time to kill more people. There’s no reason why a simple drug lord would warrant him changing his mind on that front: if anything, his ego wouldn’t allow it.

Plan B: Get Misa or Teru to Do It

While this also leaves the issue of finding Walter to begin with, getting Misa or Teru to track down Walter’s real name would also be a viable way to circumvent the problem. Both individuals already have the Shinigami Eyes, so no sacrifice on Light’s end is needed. While Teru would need to borrow Light’s Death Note in order to carry out any sort of killing, Misa could use her own to kill Walter then and there, which would be a win for Light.

This still leaves the issue of finding out where Walt even is in order to accost him, which is something that Light has little to no way of doing through his fellow Kiras. This is when he needs to turn towards…

Plan C: Use the Task Force for Info

As the rules stated, the police departments of Death Note and Breaking Bad have been merged for the sake of the debate. This means that the Task Force, as well as the NPA as a whole, would have lots of information regarding Heisenberg’s operations. While it’s likely that they wouldn’t know Walt’s real name, they would be the best lead in order to get information on the drug scene through the DEA.

So, that’s it, right? Light uses the Task Force to discover possible locations for Walter, then sends Misa and Teru to get his name for the kill?

If only it were that easy.

Walter isn’t exactly working alone. He’s got enforcers, gangs, and even the law on his side to an extent. It’s clear that Walter is mainly going to be playing defense in this one, since Light is more than likely to go out of his way to kill Walter due to his criminal nature.

Walter has Mike, one of the most powerful enforcers in Albuquerque, under his payroll. As long as Mike is working with Walter after the death of Gus, it’s highly unlikely that a Shinigami Eyes wielder would even be able to get close to Walter. Not to mention the gang of neo-nazis under Walt’s thumb that are more than willing to murder any old schmuk that comes onto Walt’s turf. Especially if they’re Japanese.

While Saul isn’t necessarily a good physical defense against attackers, he makes sure that anybody could take the fall for Walt in terms of the law, further invalidating the arrest win condition. His enforcers could also be useful, if Walt were to ever need even more firepower under his belt.

And then we have Hank, arguably one of Walt’s most important associates. While it’s possible to argue that Hank wouldn’t be willing to work with Walt as he suspected him of being Heisenberg early into Season 5, I believe it’s fair to say that we’re working with a pre-realization Hank that has connections to the DEA. Since the Kira case is such a widespread phenomenon, it’s fair to assume that Hank would be likely to know the general suspects at the time. Since the Kira case was so much more narrowed down than the Heisenberg case, I believe that Walt would be able to just use the process of elimination to target the main players, such as Soichiro, Misa, and inevitably Light.

So, to summarize where we are so far, most of Light’s ways of discovering Walt’s true identity are locked behind a magical death god wish that only two of his associates have immediate access to. The only reason that Walt’s identity got uncovered so quickly in Breaking Bad was because Hank was so close to Walt for such a long time and was able to connect the dots after a moment of reflection. Light doesn’t have that same luck, so the most feasible way for him to even kill Walter is by using Shinigami Eyes.

But good luck getting close enough to Walter in order to actually read his name. Mike, Jack, Todd, the Neo-Nazis, and even Walt himself are strapped at nearly all times. A single shot would be enough to inhibit a Death Note user’s ability to write, basically making them cannon fodder at that point.

Meanwhile, Walt’s DEA connection allows him to get a short list of possible Kira identities who he can send his gang after one by one in order to eventually get Light. Even if Rem decided to sacrifice herself to save Misa, which might be a possibility considering their bond, Walt has more than one outlet in order to administer hits.

So, no matter whether Light is playing offense or defense, he has no feasible way of actually getting Walt’s name without massive sacrifice. Walt’s forces would just completely overwhelm any sort of offensive attack, leaving Light worse off than he started, if not dead.

Sure, Light could send Teru or Misa on a suicide mission and bug them in order to get Walt’s name at the cost of his Hands, but I doubt that the two of them would even be able to get Walt’s name in the first place, regardless of risking their lives. Before they could even see Walt, there would be a well-placed bullet between their eyes delivered by Jack, Mike, or anybody with a gun.

Even with all the planning in the world, Light simply cannot kill a man that he has no way to find the name of.

Even if Light attempted to infiltrate the drug business in order to come face to face with Walter, he’d be hard-pressed to find a good way to find Walt’s name, since the Shinigami Eyes for himself are basically off the table. Not to mention the fact that Walt and his crew are going to be extremely paranoid directly after the death of Gustavo Fring, so they’d likely be hesitant on getting a new recruit with such an ambiguous past.

And, even if, somehow, Light learned Walter’s real name through the Shinigami Eyes, he’d be shot before he could write it down. Despite how calm and calculated he is at times, he's prone to give in to his violent and reckless tendencies under stress.

The only thing Light could ever hope to knock on is the roof of his own casket. The New World has a new god, and his name is Walter White.

Kid Named Vs Debater

Hello everyone reading this. It is I, the one and only, Birb. Breaking Bad is easily one of my favorite shows, if not straight up number 1, while Death Note is one of the very few Manga I’ve actually read. Suffice to say, I’m a fan of both Walter White and Light Yagami. So once this matchup began rising in popularity, you’d be correct in assuming that I’d be riding its dick harder than everyone is riding the Black Adam vs Apocalypse hype train at the time of writing (and believe me, that’s a fun fuckin train ride).

At first glance, this matchup seems extremely odd and almost ludicrously easy to figure out. Yeah, an old drug lord dying of lung cancer vs a highly intelligent high schooler with way too much time on his hands with a book that can kill anyone. You’d be forgiven for thinking this is an easy Light dub, hell that was my first impression. But peel back the layers and layers of this fight, and you have an extremely unique debate.

Let’s start simple, in a physical fight, Walter should take things easily. Living in pretty grounded worlds, neither have much in terms of physical feats. Going off their arsenals then, Light has to sit down and write Walter’s name down, while Walter has a myriad of options between his gun, his bombs or even the myriad of creative ways he can weaponize any chemicals he feels like bringing. However, the chances of this meetup even happening are slim to none.

Both Walter and Light see physical altercations as almost a last resort. These two prefer to handle things at a distance, and anything happening man to man will likely be handled through associates. Rather, this debate focuses on which one is more likely to destabilize and ultimately kill the others’ operations through the most powerful weapon in eithers arsenal. Information.

The question to ask then is, which one can actually get their hands on the other first.

Light seems to have all manner of crazy shenanigans he can get up to. The Death Note does far more than just kill people and, assuming Light can get ahold of someone close to Walt, all he needs to do is just get them to tell Light Walt’s name and boom, mission accomplished. Or hell, he could make use of the Shinigami Eyes to get Walt’s name directly and boom, mission accomplished, right?

Wellllllllll…. Not exactly. The problem at hand is actually finding a way to connect Walter to Heisenberg’s crimes. Even with the entire police force at his beck and call, Light would not have any good way of nailing down any leads on who Heisenberg is or even where to find him. Remember, Hank only found out once Walter quit, and only through connecting dots only he had. Taking them at their best, there isn’t really a gateway for Light to begin tracking down Heisenberg. So does Walt have any better luck tracking down Kira? Turns out, yeah Walter has tons of ways to narrow it down to Light. First off, Light was immediately the top suspect, and was heavily investigated. Even assuming that the DEA and the Task Force aren’t actively looking for each other’s top suspect, it is very likely Hank would at least have heard from the grape vine. And Hank is very loose and gossipy with Walt. Hell I wouldn’t even put it past Hank to take Walt on personal investigations into Kira shenanigans, he’s done it before. Walter also has ways of capitalizing on any information he could glean from Hank. Mike is a master at tracking people, and with the guys he has on his payroll, he could easily stalk and keep tabs on Light without ever bringing himself into the limelight. Nothing is also stopping Walt from having Saul get someone to take the dive for him, going to jail under the Heisenberg name as bait. Walt would very likely be able to tell what Light would need to kill, and very luckily for him, neither his name nor his face is easily tied to Heisenberg.

So having a man as bait would essentially “end” the fight from Light’s perspective, leaving Walt all the time in the world to do as he pleases, set up whatever traps or ambushes for Kira he needs. From sending assassins against him, sending Mike after him, sending Jack’s gang after him, Walt has plenty of assets capable of instantly ending Light the moment he wants to call the hit. Even assuming that Light can schedule some kind of meeting to lure Walter out and have someone use the Shinigami Eyes, there is next to no chance that Walter wouldn’t come in with some sort of game plan, either having some sort of chemical with him to stun or blind Kira, having a robotic gun or a bomb planted to activate once Walt hits the signal, or having snipers in place to pick off Light or any of his associates. There is simply no way for Light to take advantage of the Shinigami eyes without first systematically taking out Mike and Jack, which, good luck doing since both would definitely be able to realize the moment Light is tracking them to determine their connection, if at all to the Heisenberg case.

Simply put, there is no easy way for Light to start looking into the Heisenberg case, and the moment he starts putting any pieces together, Walt has several ways of throwing him off track or counter attacking with brutal force. On the other side of the coin, Walter has plenty of offensive tools and ways of tracking down Kira to the single source that is Light. The moment any suspicion is drawn on him, Light will be doomed, as he likely can’t keep the veritable army coming for him at bay.

Oh, but don’t look so blue Kira, this is certainly a debate of note, but once everything in your vision goes White, I suggest you go towards the Light.

Dick with a "D"

"Imagine being witty, couldn't be me."

First blog, eh? I'm usually more into coming up with matchups and stuff but this blog has been a ton of fun so far! This is one of the more unique matchups as physically there isn't a lot here but let's go over that real quick.

If these two were to throw hands, Walter wins. He is strapped with weapons, comes with wall-level mercury that doesn't hurt him at all, and Light's wincon is somehow writing into a notebook before Walter does either of those two things? Pretty unlikely, ngl Wiz. But of course that isn't the point of this matchup, it's a battle of brains so who comes out on top there?

Starting with who is generally smarter, it's quite difficult. Walter is more booksmart, a chemistry teacher compared to a very smart student, even a top-of-the-line student is not very comparable. Meanwhile Light is smarter at hiding his identity, being able to hold it for 7 years compared to Walter only holding it for 2. This could logically make Light harder to find compared to Walter, though both are hard to figure out regardless.

As for these characters' win conditions, Light does have a few but they are far more complicated than they seem.

SHINIGAMI EYES

The Shinigami Eyes are a great tool to have, they take out of necessity of getting a name out since it is simply told who the person is. However they still have to find out who Heisenberg is (Walter's name won't be shown as Heisenberg obviously) and no eyes are going to change that killing someone still takes a while. In addition, Light himself does not want to use the Shinigami Eyes as it only would prevent him being able to kill even more criminals, and Walter simply wouldn't be worth it.

ASSOCIATES

Light has a bunch of associates, with their own Death Notes and a few even have Shinigami Eyes. However for the most part they run into the same issues Light has, that being that they aren't any likelier to find who Heisenberg is than Light is, regardless of Shinigami Eyes or whatnot. If they could find out one of Walter's associates and get the name that way, that would be useful. It however still isn't gonna help against Walter's associates who have the one simple answer.

GUN

Walter's Associates have a lot of guns on them, and Death Note characters do not react well to gunshots. Light himself has survived some but he isn't bulletproof and that's assuming bullets are all they throw at him, and no wall level mercury and shit like that. Walter's gang is simply more packed.

THE DEA AND JAPANESE TASK FORCE

Both of these groups will be vital to one figuring out who Heisenberg/Kira are, and I believe that both will try to help each other in the long run. Yet even here Walter still finds an advantage in the simple fact that the DEA just doesn't have nearly as much information on who Heisenberg is compared to the JTF on who Kira is. It doesn't help that Light himself was a suspect which would probably be a red flag on the DEA's end.

Now, Light could trick the JTF into thinking Heisenberg and Kira might be linked but that could also lead down a complicated rabbit hole in which since I find the DEA and JTF would be connected, that might end up helping Walter hide his stuff even more. Or it could even lead to Hank Schrader teaming up alongside Light which does not sound like it could end well. Overall, while both would help the other, I feel the DEA and therefore Walter would benefit more.

Overall, while this is quite close (Probably closer than I might be implying from the previous paragraphs) and Light does have some advantages in regards to his experience, Walter's superior numbers, firepower, and 5D Chessplays ultimately outclass Light. It is The One Who Knocks who sends Kira onto death's door. The Winner is Walter White.

(inbreaking featuring walter macgrath and jesse rowe)

Breaking Bad huffer incoming. As soon as I heard about this, I had to jump on. It’s very interesting to have this kind of unconventional matchup that relies more on intelligence and resources, which are a lot more interpretive than watching a superhero blow up the moon. walter would totally win a fist fi-

Ok, so, Light obviously has an insta-win with the Death Note. That supernatural element not found anywhere in Walter’s verse definitely gives him a huge advantage initially. Coupled with his closer ties to law enforcement, he seems entirely equipped to take Mr. White out. But the lore goes a lot deeper than that once we take in everything that this investigation will hold.

For one, Walter is a lot more lowkey than Light is. Light’s extra involvement in the task force will make him much more of a target than vice versa. Not that it’s gonna be easy to tell that he’s Kira, but this immediately makes him more vulnerable than Heisenberg, whose operations are much more organized.

And in regards to organization, the people Walter has on his side are something Light cannot compete with. They have guns, professionals in multiple fields, and shitloads of cash. If they need somebody dead, they’re gonna die. It’s obvious who has the manpower here. But what about the brains themselves?

Light is regularly more intricate than Walter, but he’s also more prone to making rash decisions in stressful situations. Walter is similar in that vein, but he tends to take a more pragmatic approach with his strategies. Where Light may lash out and take drastic measures when he thinks somebody’s onto him, Walter would seed out what exactly they’re planning. Of course, he’s not always right, but his maturity compared to Light’s is notable.

The lawyer is a great help here. Now, Saul has a pretty sketchy reputation, so it could be entirely possible for Mikami to just decide to kill him, since he does have a history with the Salamancas, and that could lead to suspicions of his ties to Heisenberg. However, this is just one scenario of many, and it’s more likely Goodman would just fly under the radar, like he always does. He could set up decoys to fish Kira out or have his A-Team pull some trickery, like Huell’s pickpocketing. Better yet, he can collaborate with Mike to keep tabs on the JTF and its associates, and Mike and his guys are experts when it comes to being covert.

What could Light do in return? Well, we know he would never use the Shinigami Eyes, so that’s out. And his associates…not gonna do much. The difference between his gang and Walter’s are that Walter’s are full time criminals that have been working behind the scenes for years, while Light’s is a bunch of crazy-eyed followers that do whatever he says. Simply put, Walter has allies, and Light has lackeys. So what Kira has left is the JTF. The JTF have absolutely no reason to suspect Walter, or even know who he is. Meanwhile, Hank’s gone rogue cop before and sneakily placed bugs and dusted fingerprints, so if anything, the DEA will probably be more of a help if Walter can find a way to use him.

Of course, this is all incredibly hard to prove definitively, since what a character would do mentally in a new situation is a lot harder than expressing how they would fight in a physical altercation. However, I believe it ultimately comes down to preparation. And in that department, Walter is a lot more equipped to lead an aggressive investigation and hide himself from detection than Light is to find out this one DEA agent is related to this cancer-ridden chemistry teacher who’s managing a massive drug operation. Maybe Light could win in a few specific scenarios, but Walter’s odds are generally more appealing. Heisenberg walks away with this one, no (Gray) Matter what.

…the REAL answer is light writes down his name in the death note but forgets the sr. at the end and then walter BLOWS HIM UP very cool
