Danny VS Yusuke
“Who you gonna call?”
-Ghostbusters!
Danny Phantom, half-human, half-ghost teenage superhero defender of Amity Park, and occasionally the whole world.
Yusuke Urameshi, juvenile Spirit Detective and bane of all manner of paranormal threats. And also his attendance record.
They say the best die young, but even the hopeless schoolboy outcasts can take a trip to the ethereal realm. But what if they weren't gone for good? What if they actually just got awesome ghost powers that they now use to battle evil spirits and balance the fates of the material and spiritual worlds? Between Danny Phantom and Yusuke Urameshi, who will end up deader than dead in a DEATH BATTLE?
Before starting, regarding the material used, Danny will be analyzed in terms of his televised series, any Danny Phantom-centric comics (including those from Nickelodeon Magazine and the two graphic novels by Gabriela Epstein, being A Glitch in Time and Fair Game), and any Danny Phantom-centric games. While there are arguments for Danny Phantom sharing a multiverse with properties like Fairly Oddparents and other Nickelodeon series through games like Nicktoons Unite, they will not be considered here. This also excludes other Nickelodeon crossover titles, such as Globs of Doom, Battle for Volcano Island, All Star Brawl 1 and 2, etc. While controversial, statements from Danny Phantom’s creator, Butch Hartman, will also be considered as supplemental evidence.
As for Yusuke, we are examining both the Yu Yu Hakusho manga and anime adaptation, as well as the official dub, and associated guidebook material. Similar to Danny, crossover media will not be considered.
Background
Danny Phantom
Young Danny Fenton was just 14 when his parents built a very strange machine it was designed to view a world unseen (he's gonna catch them all cause he's Danny Phantom)
When it didn't quite work, his folks, they just quit, but then Danny took a look inside of it. There was a great big flash, everything just changed, his molecules got all rearranged. Phantom phantom. When he first woke up he realized he had snow white hair, and glowing green eyes. He could walk through walls, disappear and fly. He was much more unique than the other guys.
It was then that he knew what he had to do, he had to stop all the ghosts that were coming through, he's here to fight, for me and you!
At least, that is what the show's opening theme song tells us about the great Invisobill. Danny was your average outcast unpopular school dork, always bullied and pushed around at school, while at home he had to deal with his ghost crazy parents. He had very little control over his life until he got superpowers and the ability to change into a ghost, making it now Danny's time to shine, and so he got to work being the up and coming superhero, defeating ghostly monsters of the week and sending them back into the Ghost Zone where they belonged with the help of his friends Sam and Tucker. However, it wasn't all glitz and glamor for the half ghost teenager. As is a phrase familiar with one of the inspirations behind his character, with great power came great responsibility, and Danny wasn't exactly ready for all the responsibility that would come with his new powers, and the target that he would then put on his head.
Danny wouldn't exactly have much time for taking his revenge on his bullies when he was being hunted by interdimensional ghost catchers, and of course, his own parents. Clearly, this wasn't exactly conducive to a healthy growing environment for young Danny, and he may have been a bit over his head. Thankfully, there was a much more experienced ghost-human hybrid around, one who was ready to take Danny under his wing and train him to use his powers, long time friend of his parents Vlad Masters. It's too bad that Vlad was also an evil mastermind who aimed to remove Danny's dad from the equation and then marry his mother. As it turned out, a lot of the adults didn't act very adult either, so Danny just had to learn how to keep on the straight and narrow himself as he learned more about his powers and fought greater threats, such as Pariah Dark, an ancient, powerful ghost who sought to conquer the ghost and human realms. He had his work cut out for him.
Of course, it could be said that with such amazing potential and powers, the greatest threat to Amity Park may have been Danny himself. After all, he may not want to play the hero forever, who knows where the unpredictable tides of fate may take him? Danny would be forced to see this for himself first hand when he faced down his own dark reflection from a future where his friends and family were gone, and he left his heroism behind, leaving only Dark Danny. This future self was immensely powerful and threatened to recreate the conditions of his timeline, so Danny had to face his own responsibilities head on and grow to defeat himself and work towards a better future, for himself and everyone he cares about. This didn't mean that his self consciousness disappeared, however. When it seemed that he was made obsolete as a result of Vlad Plasmius and his Master Blasters, he decided to remove his ghost powers for good. It was probably a pretty bad time to do that, given that a giant asteroid made of an anti-ghost material was heading towards Earth and would promptly destroy the whole planet. Fortunately, Danny was able to get his powers back, and with them, he united with every other ghost in the Ghost Zone to turn the Earth intangible, allowing the Disasteroid to pass through and saving the whole world and the Ghost Zone which was parallel to it. With that, Danny's identity was revealed to the public, and he'd have to live his life with his true self known to the world.
…Until Dark Danny escaped his confinement, merged with Clockwork and threatened to break the timeline itself in his quest for revenge. After so much time since the Disasteroid incident, Danny’s powers had waned significantly and he wasn't prepared for this new, powerful threat. After reaching the source of all ghost power, Danny would learn that the ghosts and ghost energy all trace back to one thing: emotion. After beating all his foes, saving the planet and getting his “happy ending”, Danny no longer knew his purpose for his fighting, and was weaker as a result. It was then that he recognized his true purpose for fighting: to protect his friends and everyone that he loved did Danny Phantom come back, better than ever. With the help of his arch nemesis Vlad Plasmius, Danny defeated Dark Danny once again and saved his timeline. Unfortunately, by the end of it, the timeline was nearly broken beyond repair, so Clockwork made a new one for Danny. One where his identity was never revealed, allowing Danny to go on as a superhero with his secret identity, and letting him be who he truly was, letting him keep his strength. No matter what timeline or world he finds himself in however, Danny Phantom will always be here to fight, for me and you!
Yusuke Urameshi
Yusuke Urameshi was unlike any other typical school delinquent; in the sense that he was a lot worse. Skipping class, bringing home bad grades, getting into fights, Yusuke checked all the boxes. With only a few people who even care about him, it comes across as a shock that Yusuke of all people would commit such a selfless act of saving a kid from getting hit by a car at the cost of his own. This one act would forever change the life of Yusuke as he was visited by the Spirit Guide Botan, who told him that he can get a second shot at life if he’s able to overcome a small set of trials. Realizing that there are people who do care about him, Yusuke accepted the offer and after some close calls and bumps in the road, he finally managed to rejoin the world of the living once more but now things seemed different for him. Yusuke was now able to see things that he couldn’t before and interact with them and that’s when it was explained to him by Botan that Yusuke had finally awakened his Spirit Energy and officially appointed him as the new Spirit Detective, whose job is to capture and detain any demonic apparition that threatens the Human World.
Thankfully, he wouldn’t have to tackle all of it alone as he would be joined by self-proclaimed rival Kazuma Kuwabara and the demons Kurama and Hiei as they formed Team Urameshi and fought off against any and all threats, getting stronger and learning new tricks up their sleeves. Yusuke ended up making a name for himself and becoming a target for demons, so he began training under Genkai, where he learned to better harness his spiritual prowess. However, no matter how hard he trained, there was always something mentally blocking him from realizing his true potential. Yusuke would be forced to put his skills to the test in the Dark Tournament, a tournament filled with powerful demons that Yusuke and his friends would have to defeat. Here he would face Toguro, an immensely powerful demon who was once a human that won the Dark Tournament. Toguro killed Genkai, and threatened to kill everyone else that Yusuke loved if he did not win his fight against him. In order to win, Yusuke had to face his own self. The blockage to his powers came from within - all his life, Yusuke had hidden his true feelings from others, and from himself. His whole delinquent act was a mask he made for himself, unwilling to express his emotions and his care for others. When he was finally pushed to his breaking point, Yusuke became much stronger, literally with a wave of his own emotions. Then, he managed to defeat Toguro and win the Dark Tournament, reviving Genkai in the process.
This would not be the end for Yusuke Urameshi, he still had his job as a Spirit Detective to attend to, and Toguro was just the tip of the iceberg of all the crazy demon affairs that Yusuke would encounter. Toguro was working under Sakyo, who hoped to open a portal between the human world and the Demon World, allowing more demons to enter through. After Toguro's defeat and Sakyo's death, someone else had continued Sakyo's plans, and that someone was none other than the former Spirit Detective before Yusuke, Sensui. Like Yusuke, Sensui began his career taking care of demons and paranormal phenomena, but he took a very different path from Yusuke when he witnessed the cruelty that humans would incur upon captured demons. Sensui nearly went mad with guilt, so he sought to bring every demon into the human world to allow them to wreck havoc across human civilization. Of course, Yusuke wasn't about to let that happen, but Sensui proved to be more powerful than Yusuke could deal with on his own. Now is the time for your classic anime plot twist: turns out, Yusuke was part demon all along! How convenient! Being reborn with this newfound power, Yusuke took it up with Sensui, but even then it wasn't exactly enough. Our favorite Spirit Detective was too green at using demon energy, and Sensui was too experienced for him. And then, something strange happened. Yusuke was then possessed by his demonic ancestor, Raizen, who took over his body and beat the crap out of Sensui.
The threat was now defeated and the portal was going to be closed, but understandably, Yusuke had a lot of questions about what just happened. Also, now being discovered to be a powerful demon, he was now fired from the Spirit Detective position and would now be hunted down by the Spirit World. The only thing left to do now was to go to Demon World and take care of his demon business, even if it meant leaving behind his human life and relationships in the Human World. But at this point, was he really human - or Demon? He had always put up a front as a tough delinquent, but now it was undeniable that there was a side to him that had a craving lust for battle and challenge and seemed to have a growing nonchalance to what happens between humans and demons, which really began to throw into question what he was fighting for in the first place. He'd have to find the answers to those questions later, because right now he had to deal with his demon grand pappy and the politics of the Demon World. The Demon World has its territory separated into three empires ruled by three kings, Raizen, Mukuro and Yomi. Many things had divided these rulers, but the main problem was food. Raizen, after meeting and falling in love with a human, had thought that demons should stop eating humans altogether, and so he fasted for hundreds of years and was now at the brink of death. Mukuro thought that demons should only eat humans in moderation, and Yomi wanted demons to feast upon humans as much as they desired. Yusuke spent a year training in the Demon World to eventually match up with Raizen, but ultimately, Raizen would perish from his own hunger, leaving Yusuke as the heir to his kingdom. With Raizen's death, the other empires began to quickly plan to take over and go into war, and Yusuke was certainly no leader, so he had another idea to end this dispute between demons. They would hold a tournament, and the winner would become the ruler of the whole Demon World.
This new Demon World Tournament proved to be much more fierce than the Dark Tournament, but Yusuke was prepared to fight for everything he had… Or was he? During his battle with Yomi, Yusuke had realized that he wasn't really fighting with all the power he had available to him. After defeating villain after villain and being put into this tournament for political control, fighting and living for a whole year as a demon, Yusuke had lost his reason to fight. What was the point of it all? Was he just fighting for the sake of it, like a mindless beast? Without his real drive, he could no longer use his powers to the best of his ability. It was then, in the confines of his own mind that he realized the reason he had for fighting. He fought and gave his all, for all of these battles, for the sake of his friends and loved ones, everyone who had stood by and supported him in his life. Having recognized his true purpose for fighting, he stood back up and gave it his all, giving Yomi the greatest fight in his life and reaching higher heights, even attaining the mythical Sacred Energy - his version of it, at least, by harmonizing his spiritual and demonic selves which had been in conflict until now. Yusuke did end up losing the fight, but no biggie. Someone else who was more human friendly ended up winning the tournament, and Yusuke could always try again next time. Besides, Yusuke's work wasn't exactly done anyways. With new leadership in the Spirit World, the barriers between the human and demon worlds had collapsed, and Yusuke now had to help protect the newfound peace between humans and demons. Although he was no longer a spirit detective, Yusuke decided to stick with a gig of being a paranormal investigator, still seeking out spiritual ongoings and helping others back in the human world. No matter what form he takes - a hero, a demon, a perverted delinquent - Yusuke Urameshi will always be known as one of the greatest souls to walk the Earth and the great beyond.
Skills
Danny Phantom
He may be a teenager, but Danny is pretty smart when it comes to taking down his enemies. He often comes up with creative ways to outwit his foes, and despite being put up against many combatants more experienced in fighting and ghost powers than him, he always manages to hold his own and prove he is no slouch in combat. Even rather early in his career, he was able to defeat and outsmart Skulker, one of the most experienced and skilled ghost hunters to exist and is referred to as the greatest ghost hunter in the ghost zone. He also expresses a high level of adaptability, being able to grow powerful enough to match threats who could previously embarrass him in combat (like the Fright Knight or Vlad Plasmius), even when these threats have decades, or even millennia, of experience over him. He even is adept at weapons combat, being able to match Vlad in a sword fight when he only had a regular blade, while Vlad had an ecto sword and had dispatched a squad of ming warriors (albeit he likely cheated with ghost powers). While he often fails to think about ways to use his powers creatively early on until it’s made obvious to him, he has improved in this field over time, such as when he used a magnifying glass to amplify the potency of his ghost ray and cast a wider field of light to disintegrate Johnny’s shadow.
His intelligence even extends to non-combat fields. As someone heavily versed in space and aeronautics, he was successfully able to land a space shuttle with no casualties, despite having no formal training beyond computer simulations and being in a life-or-death scenario. He also was capable of passing a test on poetry after studying for only a few hours prior. His mother, Maddie Fenton, is also a 9th degree black belt, although this does not seem to have passed down to Danny.
Yusuke Urameshi
Before he even bit the dust the first time, Yusuke was already a pretty decent brawler, with no one in his school standing even a remote chance against him. Even when he isn’t in his own body, he can still deliver one hell of a beatdown to others without much faster. Yusuke would later attend a tournament where the psychic Genkai would choose her new student based on whoever wins. During this tournament, not only would Yusuke surprise the old woman with a few tricks of his own but he would also defeat Kibano, a martial artist who has mastered many other forms of martial arts. He would soon get to really take his combat prowess to new heights when he managed to defeat Rando, a demon who had defeated 99 martial arts masters and can copy moves by looking at it, getting to be Genkai’s new student and learn her techniques. During this time, Genkai put Yusuke through the ringer in order to enhance his own abilities and it was worth it as he overcame his initial limit of 1 Spirit Gun a day. After 2 weeks of training under Genkai, Yusuke was able to attain proper spiritual control, developing the brand new Spirit Shotgun move. Yusuke is also very easily capable of snuffing out lesser demons who can each take out a squad of army special forces. Yusuke’s fighting skill would only continue to soar as he continued to face stronger adversaries such as the Younger Toguro, who was a master of his own dojo and Genkai’s equal in her prime and has lived for well over 50 years. While the first time they fought was more of a preview of what’s to come, Yusuke knew he had to get serious if he wanted to stand any remote chance against him, so it was back to training with Genkai for another two months. Afterwards, Yusuke was so skilled that he could even train and fight back against opponents in his sleep.
Yusuke would also end up fighting against Sensui, the former Spirit Detective. Sensui had been killing demons since he was a young boy and as he got older, ended up picking up some new tricks along the way. His fighting style is known as Resshuken, a fighting style that focuses on using the upper body to divert enemy attacks and using the lower body to deliver crushing counterattacks. Kurama stated that this is the kind of opponent that Yusuke is weak against and Genkai said that the Resshuken fighting style is something that cannot be taught unless one has mastered all other forms and is the strongest one that exists when it comes to other barehanded fighting styles. Yusuke still managed to hold his own against the former detective, continuing to surprise him at every moment, even when his instincts kicked in to see Yusuke’s attacks oncoming, Sensui was still getting blindsided by Yusuke’s onslaught of attacks. Sensui is also the only other person capable of utilizing Sacred Energy, a power unlike Spirit or Demon Energies. Koenma states that it's something that not even Genkai could obtain and yet Sensui did it in less than 10 years. Later on in the Three Kings Saga, Yusuke would end up making his own version of Sacred Energy in the span of a year.
Despite what he may seem at first glance, Yusuke is a very clever and adaptive fighter. He often thinks of creative ways to defeat tough, fast or tricky opponents and can think on the fly, even in perilous situations. Even when fighting opponents with much more fighting experience than him, Yusuke usually manages to defeat them with his wits.
Equipment
Danny Phantom
Fenton Phones and Webcam
Upgrade over previous communication tech, allowing Danny to transmit audiovisual elements to others over long distances, discreetly. They also filter out spectral noise, enabling easier communication in the ghost zone. The webcam seems to be a one-off attachment, however, after Walker stole it.
Thermos
The Fenton Thermos is one of the premiere tools of a ghost hunter, being easily capable of capturing ghosts and preventing them from escaping, despite their ability to naturally phase through solid matter. This even works on ghosts that are massively more powerful than Danny, such as Freakshow with the Reality Gauntlet, or Dark Danny. The Thermos has also been shown to be able to close interdimensional portals by using “reverse polarity”. Generally, the thermos only fails when it is physically manipulated or pushed from the outside, as it can hold ghosts for extended periods of time without the cap being closed. As his emotional drive is fixed on becoming a bridge between the human and ghost worlds, Danny will now choose to use the Thermos only as a last resort. Or, he will use the convenient release or grapple net function.
Ghost Fisher
The Fenton Ghost Fisher was originally made to catch ghosts from the ghost portal, but Danny can use it offensively to wrangle his enemies together. Even opponents as powerful and massive as Dorathea's dragon form are helpless against it. That said, it can be tangled up to render it incapable for a time. The wire itself can be used separately for snares.
Specter Deflecter
The Specter Deflecter is a device that allows the wearer to depower any ghostly entities that touch them. Danny can't make much use of it on himself, as it will hurt him when he turns into a ghost, but he can put it on his opponent to depower them. This also makes the wearer immune to other ghosts' powers, and it even made Sam immune to Desiree altering the timeline to make it so that she and Danny never met, as well as protect them from Ember's mind control. The belt even affects those who aren’t ghosts currently, as long as they have ghost DNA, but fails if the target’s ghostly elements are being suppressed. The belt can be locked as well, making it harder to remove, and comes with an energy pulse to destroy detritus around the target. With all that said, the belt is not perfect, as strong enough ghosts can still fight (albeit with diminished strength) while in contact with the belt, and even stronger ghosts can remove it outright. In Urban Jungle, the Deflector can even be equipped on the Specter Speeder, giving it a protective shield.
Plasmius Maximus
An item that Danny technically stole from his nemesis Vlad Plasmius and named after himself, the Plasmius Maximus is a device that is able to completely disable and short circuit ghost powers. Using this, Danny and Vlad had their ghost powers disabled for three hours before they'd be able to regain them.
Jack o’ Nine Tails
This odd weapon is a standard gadget used by the Fenton family as part of their anti-ghost armory. It is a small, cylindrical device that can stretch itself out in two parts to be used as a baton, broken apart for a stun baton, or send out several metallic tendrils that will shock ghosts upon contact with them.
Boooomerang
Silly name aside, this Sokka-approved throwing instrument can be keyed into the ecto signatures of different ghosts, allowing it to track them wherever they go, continuing to work for about 10 years. However, if the signature is altered in any way (like Danny fusing with Vlad’s ectoplasm to become Dark Danny), the tracking ceases, even if the signature still contains part of the original signature. It also works as a regular attack.
Ghost Catcher
The Fenton Ghost Catcher is a dreamcatcher shaped device that can separate a ghost from the body that inhabits it by moving it through the gadget. This even works on inanimate objects, being able to split body and spirit apart. On the other end is a merge function, for merging spirits and vessels back together. Danny once used this device to split his being in two halves, the human and the ghost.
Ghost Gauntlets
The Ghost Gauntlets are a set of large gauntlets that are made to weaken and counteract ghosts. How do they work? Just punch the ghosts, really hard. This strength increase allowed Jack Fenton (who previously lost a tug of war to ghost vultures, who lost to Danny, who lost to a Vlad using only one arm to fight) to utterly demolish Vlad in a fight. In the Ultimate Enemy Game, old Vlad allows Danny to use his upgraded version of the ghost gauntlets briefly, which come with claws that rip spectral energy and humans apart, even being able to affect the intangible medallion inside of Danny, which he could not phase out of his body with any of his powers, despite being able to phase through his skin. Obviously, he no longer has these after leaving the timeline.
Infimap
The Infimap is a mythical map of the Ghost Zone that Danny has access to. With it, Danny can think of where he wants to go, and the Infimap will fly him there by moving to the closest Ghost Zone opening in the real world. The Infimap has a mind of its own and will take the wielder somewhere else where it needs to be at times, rather than where they necessarily want the map to go.
Ecto Skeleton
The Ecto Skeleton is perhaps the most powerful Fenton invention to date. It is a large mech suit that can directly enhance the user's capabilities a hundred fold. It also comes with energy blasts, energy grenades and built in rocket boosters that allow it to fly. The range of this suits attacks is massive, being able to destroy swarms of enemies at once. When Danny used it, he was able to replicate his ghost powers directly onto the suit, being able to duplicate the whole suit as he does his own body. The Ecto Skeleton does come with a major drawback, being that the power it supplies can produce a large strain on the user, draining their stamina and the energy of the suit. As a result, it doesn't exactly last very long. In its second appearance, the suit was upgraded with nanites and Technus’ rod, circumventing its life-draining weakness, but also making the user vulnerable to remote manipulation. The suit was also destroyed, so Danny no longer possesses it.
Time Medallion
Sometimes taken from Clockwork’s realm, these medals have a vast control over time. Using them grants Danny complete immunity to all of Clockwork’s time based abilities, including time stop and time rewind. They allow wielders to keep their memories and place within a timeline, even after it is rewritten. And they allow time travel, as well as temporal stability within a certain time period, to where removing the medallion sends you back to your normal time period. We even see that with them, Danny is capable of flying with Vlad throughout multiple different timestreams to fight Dark Danny. Despite Danny carrying them several times, his most recent stint with them ended with him giving them to Clockwork so the latter could fuse them into a new staff, so Danny doesn’t have them at the moment.
Miscellaneous Fenton Works Technology
As part of a ghost hunting family, Danny’s house is filled with ghost-fighting technology, including:
Fenton Finder: A device to track the position of ghosts (and later humans). Eventually, was upgraded to show visuals of the ghost, and track ectostorm locations.
Ghost Gabber: A device to translate ghost sounds into intelligible language.
Ghost Weasel: Meant to collect ambient ghost energy, then throw it into the ghost zone. Can also be used to store ghosts in their non-energy forms, making them quite uncomfortable in the tight space.
Ghost Shredder: A multi-bladed device to shred ghosts
Fenton Foamer: Releases a blast of ecto foam to smother targets. Comes in large and portable variants. Can also negate ghostly possession.
Fenton Crammer: Shrinks objects to a size where they’re dwarfed by sweat drops. If used on ghosts, shorts out their powers as well.
Lipstick Beam Emitter: Shoots a focused plasma beam of energy at targets.
Portable Ghost Portal: A device stolen by Johnny 13 from Fenton Works, allowing him to make portals in and out of the ghost zone from anywhere.
Fenton Anti-Creep Stick: A bat with the word “Fenton” on it. Danny is quite proficient with it.
Ecto Bazooka: Bazooka with multiple shot types and a laser sight, one for regular blasts and another to banish enemies to the ghost zone. The banishment shots only require being near an opponent, not directly hitting them. The gun does require a charge, though.
Scooter
Fenton Rod: A bo staff that shoots ecto energy from both ends, which can be split in two to dual wield.
Fenton Wrist Rays: Wrist-mounted ecto energy shooters. There is also a more laser-oriented variant which fires continuous energy streams.
Wraith Wrangler: Ghost-snaring rope, thicker than the Fenton Fisher’s line to make escape more difficult.
Ghost Evaporation Device: A bulky machine that evaporates any ghost in a cell phone calling area.
Fenton Skateboard
Ecto Stoppo-Power-Erfier: Prevents ghosts from using their special abilities like phasing, invisibility, flight, energy beams, or transforming.
Maddie Modulator: Reverses the effects of spectral frequencies.
Fenton Battlestaff: Good for whacking.
Fenton Ecto Micromissile Launcher
Ecto Electricity Gun
Ghost Laser: An unnamed laser Jack plans to use after questioning what another ghost item does.
Ectobombs
Ecto-Dejecto: Injects ghosts with an agent intended to reduce their powers to nothing, but instead give them greater power and vitality, even allowing Dani’s clone body to stabilize itself after being reduced to formless ectoplasm.
Fenton Peeler: An arm cannon that spits ectoplasm, and reshapes itself into full-body armor at the press of a button. When the cannon is fired, it peels away all layers of a ghost’s disguise, revealing their base ectoplasmic form. It was even able to work on Dark Danny, stripping away his conjured human body. On humans, it merely rips their clothes to pieces.
Fenton Atomizer (Debatable/Inapplicable): Rips ghosts down to their absolute most basic essence, which in the case of Danny Phantom ghosts is the raw emotions they spawned from. Since energy cannot be destroyed, reversing the polarity on the Atomizer brings ghosts back.
Ecto Exodus Alarm: Informs of incoming massive ghost invasions.
Ecto Saber: A double bladed ecto weapon.
Eye Beams: Ecto-energy beams shooting from the eyeholes of Fenton hazmat suits.
Grapple Hook
Propellor Blade: A handheld device creating a spinning propellor to attack by shooting outward, then retracting.
Specter Speeder: A rocket propelled vehicle that moves across and through land, sea, air, and space to reach its destination. Equipped with a scanner to detect real world items, and a laser cannon that disables ghost barriers, but can also simply ram into foes with enough power to knock out even Vlad Plasmius, who previously withstood Danny’s ghostly wail and got back up. Also comes equipped with an escape pod (with cloaking technology).
Fenton Portal: Allows travel between the Ghost Zone and Earth, via punching a hole in the human realm to precise coordinates. As long as the ecto-filtrator is changed every 6 months, it is perfectly stable, but without this condition, it will explode violently.
Fenton Works: The Fenton home is modified with a ghost-deflecting shield that stops ghosts from entering or using their powers to breach the house. If ghosts do get in, the Anti-Creep mode assaults them with a barrage of anti-ecto weapons.
Fenton RV: The Fenton Family’s assault vehicle, equipped with ectoplasmic goo spitters, “lightning” rays, a ghost-deflecting shield, and all terrain treads.
Emergency Ops Center: A mobile air command center, which can shift between a stationary radio hub, a blimp, and a high speed auto-piloted jet with a bullhorn and ejector. Should it be destroyed, the center comes equipped with two ATVs, with hovering capabilities.
Prom Fright items
To save prom night, Danny utilized several boosts, including:
Ghost Power: Restores some of Danny’s vitality
Fenton Extractor: Captures ghosts in a 180 degree radius in the direction Danny is facing.
Shield: Makes Danny immune to damage for 10 seconds.
Miscellaneous Game items
Extra Life: Gives Danny an extra surge of energy when he falls in battle.
Fright Fighter: A jet Danny uses to engage in dogfights, equipped with a single-cannon gun and missile launcher. With it, he can access several power-ups, including:
Nitro Tank: Increases Danny’s fuel for boosting.
Repair: Increases the vitality of Danny’s fighter.
Random: Alters the parts of Danny’s fighter, giving it new stats for 15 seconds.
Shield: Creates a barrier that disintegrates ghosts on contact.
Rewind: Ahh that’s hot, that’s reversing the enemy’s trajectory back where they came from!
Ecto Pulse: Shoots out a passive omnidirectional energy wave.
Attack Power Boost: Adjusts Danny’s shots to be spread shots, double shots, wide shots, triple shots, arrow shots, just generally stronger.
Shot Type Change: Adjusts Danny’s shots to allow for piercing, laser, and homing properties.
Heal: Restores some vitality to Danny’s body. Can be stored in bulk.
Smartbomb and Timed Radial Blast: Explosives attached to the Specter Speeder.
Defense, Speed, and Strength Up: Boost Danny’s defense, speed, and power. Seemingly can only be used one at a time.
Yusuke Urameshi
Fake Ear
Yusuke possesses a fake toy ear. Is it useful in a fight? Not really, but he can use it to trick ear grabby principals.
Psychic Spyglass
One of the first items Yusuke received when he became the Spirit Detective. These special lenses allow him to see through objects such as pockets, bags or the clothes of another person. Using this does consume some amount of spiritual energy.
Concentration Ring
A ring that Yusuke wore when he was first starting out. The ring amplifies the power of the Spirit Gun severalfold, however it leaves him exhausted after it is used.
Demon Compass
The Demon Compass is a Spirit Detective device used to locate a pre-identified demon by tracking down their energy.
Cigarettes
Ah, teenage smoking addictions. As a typical delinquent youth, Yusuke owns packs of cigarettes that he keeps around with him. In Yusuke’s hands, even something as mundane as a cigarette can become an important tool, as he was once able to stick one of them onto an opponent's clothes to see him in the dark. In the anime, this was censored so that it belonged to Genkai, but in the original manga Yusuke owned the cigarettes.
Communication Mirror
These small communication devices allow Yusuke and others to be able to talk to one another, namely Botan, across long distances. Even when they are dimensions apart in the Demon World, they still manage to work just fine.
Itako Whistle
The Itako Whistle is a Spirit Detective tool that emits a specific frequency which only demons are capable of hearing, alerting them to the location of the sound. It is reportedly very annoying, but I wouldn't know.
Tracking Stickers
These tracking stickers can be applied to one’s person, and once they do, they can only be taken off by the person that applied them, attuned to their specific spiritual frequency. They can also signify the amount of damage that they have sustained by their color.

For the most part, Danny in his human form has all the standard features of a human, with the exception that he can use ghost powers while in human form, has slightly superhuman strength (enough that his human friend Tucker caved in the forehead of a ghost comparable to Danny’s ghost half, we’ll get to that later), and minor body control, being able to put his head and neck back into place when Poindexter’s possession twisted them sideways (albeit this may just be toonforce). He can transform between his human and ghost forms at will, and this transformation even seems to have force to it, pushing back any nearby entities, as well as seemingly assimilating accessories into Danny, as his helmet disappeared off his head when he transformed into a ghost. He can even transform the Ecto Skeleton, increasing its power proportional to his ghost form’s boosts.
All ghosts naturally possess a universal set of abilities. They can regenerate, possess targets, fly, phase through solid matter, shoot ecto energy beams, and manipulate their bodies to stretch and contort (even into forms of pure energy without skeletal structures), allowing them to shrink to small enough sizes that they can fit inside the Fenton Thermos, despite the Thermos being usually a quarter of their size. The size manipulation also seems to work in reverse, as Walker made himself the size of a building in his projection to Danny. They all possess naturally superhuman strength, speed, and durability as well. Danny specifically is a half-ghost, meaning he can use several of these ghost abilities while in his human state. Natural ghosts also potentially don’t have to age, although they can do so if they wish, and exist for over 2000 years.
Of course, there are drawbacks as well. They are vulnerable to all sorts of ghost-specific capturing and hunting equipment (including blood blossoms and ectoranium), their powers fail when passing through anti-ecto mediums (like the ghost-proof walls of Fenton Works), and…something else.
As revealed in the Glitch in Time graphic novel, the world began with every being, and every world, united into one. That is, until a cataclysmic war broke out, the effects being so devastating they literally split reality in twain. Half of it became the ghost zone, the refuge for all the discarded emotions the human world could not contain. These emotions, these abstract feelings and thoughts, became ghosts. Meaning that every ghost, at their core, is effectively ectoplasm surrounding raw emotion, a statement Maddie Fenton, an expert ghost hunter, also backs up by referring to ghosts as “manifestations of ectoplasmic energy and post-human consciousness”. This even applies to half ghosts like Danny and Vlad, meaning that they also require an “emotional drive” in order to access the peak of their powers. This drive is extremely volatile. Without it, ghost powers fail almost completely. With it, Danny was capable of completely overpowering a fusion of Dark Danny and Clockwork, when Dark Danny by himself completely dominated Danny in their first battles. Vlad was also able to hold back Dark Danny while only partially transformed with his drive, and this drive even extends to the original beings who split the two realms in the great war, which were humans. This may explain feats like Tucker damaging a ghost who scales to Danny Phantom, and Danny would have a similar level of emotional drive as a human. As evidence, Danny without transforming can defeat henchmen from the Guys in White, who are designed with weapons to fight Danny Phantom.
More notably, as seen in the Fair Game novel, a ghost continues to exist in some form even when reduced to their most basic essence, or atomized. When Wulf’s friend was hit by an ecto-net amped by an atomizer, she was reduced to nothing but pure anger and hatred, which then possessed nearby Amity Parkers, amplifying their strength and making them just as hateful as the ghost. These emotions can even allow ghosts to completely reform from atomization, albeit only when the proper equipment is utilized.
As another application of this drive, Danny has very impressive accelerated development. He went from being outsped by Tucker to outpacing the latter in a matter of days, and he transitioned from being unable to inflict any damage to the Fright Knight, to overpowering him in a melee struggle, in a matter of minutes.
Ecto Energy
Effectively a ghost’s physical being manifested into multiple energy types. With enough ectoplasm, Danny can create energy beams from any part of his body (even the rear end and feet), form light flashes to see in the dark, infuse his ecto energy with fire to burn or melt targets, shoot plasma rings and beams, manipulate opposing energy and electrify it, and concentrate the beams into more focused lasers, massive energy balls, or wide-spanning AOE attacks, precise enough to concussively knock objects into specific places. It’s even revealed late into the series that enough ghost energy can even modify a target on the molecular level, turning the previously fully-human Danny into a half-ghost once more, an idea corroborated by the accidents that gave Vlad and Danny their ghost powers, along with fatal ecto acne in Vlad’s case. He also demonstrated the ability to send energy as a thin wisp to cut into the ground, in order to send a message. Some ghosts have even been able to create constructs tied to their ectoplasm, like Johnny 13’s bike or Ember’s bandmates, which disappear when the primary ghosts’ essence leaves the dimension. Or just, general ecto weapons, like Vlad making ecto swords, lassos, and flyswatters. On a miscellaneous note, ghost energy has been constantly stated to rip targets apart “molecule by molecule”, and Danny in his pretend fight with Johnny 13 noted he’d send Johnny to “oblivion”. While he was faking trying to kill, he still had Johnny on the ground defeated, implying that Danny can permanently destroy ghosts despite their regeneration (Debatable/Likely Inapplicable).
Ghost Sense
Danny has the ability to sense the presence of spiritual entities. Whenever a ghost (or half-ghost) is nearby, Danny will experience a cold shiver and breathe out cold air. This ghost sense even seems to be able to work while he is sleeping. However, some specific ecto artifacts, like Dorathea’s ring, can suppress ghosts from Danny’s senses. Later on, it was revealed this ghost sense was actually an application of another ghost power, which we’ll get to.
Flight
Self-explanatory, he can soar through the air at incredible speeds, even through the void of space (albeit he usually uses a helmet for those instances, but doesn’t require it).
Intangibility
As a ghost, Danny Phantom is able to phase through pretty much anything whenever he wants, and is sometimes able to hit other ghosts while they are intangible. He can phase not only himself, but other people and objects as well - anything that he holds onto, he can turn intangible, as well as focus the intangibility effect only on certain parts of his body, or maintain intangibility while being able to interact with objects selectively. Alternately, he can also make the ground beneath someone intangible to make his target fall through the floor. Interestingly, that instance doesn’t make the ground intangible in the standard-see through method, as opposed to just coating it with ecto energy, implying that humans naturally phase through ecto material. This makes sense, as humans naturally phase through elements in the Ghost Zone, a realm composed *entirely* of ectoplasm. This natural ghost phasing can work on the walls of Fenton Works, which blocked out the ecto energy spell of Ember’s kiss, despite other humans in walled settings being affected. Then, ghosts can become intangible on a level beyond that, which ghosts cannot naturally attack without either using ecto energy or their own dedicated intangible state. His intangibility expertise is honed to the point he could maintain intangibility on both himself, and a small jet, for an entire night to evade the Guys in White. Ghosts can also affect other intangible ghosts via ecto energy, or attack while in their intangible state. Occasionally, passing through objects while intangible also has ghosts pick up some of the objects inside what they were passing through, but this is inconsistent.
Overshadowing
Ghosts, when intangible, can phase into the bodies of others, allowing their consciousness to dominate the target’s temporarily. Naturally, with a strong enough willpower, ghosts can even overshadow other ghosts or half-ghosts, or push out ghosts attempting to overshadow them. Danny has also improved his overshadowing over time. When he first attempted to overshadow Vlad in “The Ultimate Enemy”, his mind was completely overcome by Vlad’s evil. But Danny in S3 had advanced to the point he could overshadow a double of Vlad, and be perfectly fine afterwards. While Danny has never done this himself, some ghosts have even been able to place a piece of their essence into inanimate objects, like how Kitty placed her essence into her clothes so that whoever wore them, would become the new host for Kitty’s spirit. Or how Technus’ exploded goop body possesses all the technology it falls on.
Malleability
As seen above, ghosts can reshape their physical form in order to dodge attacks. Danny similarly uses this to reshape his feet into a tail when flying. Why? Idk it looks cool. Some ghosts have even used their malleable bodies to outright turn into energy-based forms, or shapeshift into different appearances, although Danny has never done the latter directly.
Invisibility
As a ghost, Danny is able to make himself completely invisible to the naked eye (a separate power from his intangibility). While in this state, he can only be seen by other ghosts. Danny is also able to use this ability to make other people or objects invisible as well, such as when he made the walls around Vlad’s room invisible so he would expose himself. Indecently. Ghosts can also see other invisible ghosts, including when those ghosts normally have different types of invisibility, like Youngblood (Debatable)
Spirit Removal
Danny is able to reach inside of a person's body and remove the spirit that is inhabiting it, ready for a quick trip to the Thermos. He has even been shown to be able to do it remotely with his ecto blasts. A ghost he is relative to, Poindexter, was once able to fully extract Danny's soul from his body once he possessed him. It sort of sounds like it makes the ghost catcher kind of pointless, but hey what do I know? The power even extends to a deeper level than just ectoplasm, as Danny was able to siphon raw emotional energy out of Valerie to blast it elsewhere, weakening and pacifying her.
Ecto Blast
One of Danny’s earliest powers, he can fire a stream of energy from his hands that can damage ghosts and humans, even when ghosts are intangible. See Ecto Energy for more. These Ecto Balats share some similarities with light, such as reflecting off of mirrors and being able to grow with a magnifying glass, and Butch Hartman seems to agree with them operating as lightspeed.
Barrier
By forming ectoplasmic energy around himself, Danny can create a barrier capable of protecting him from all sorts of attacks. This barrier is able to protect him even from stronger opponents, such as Vlad Plasmius and Vortex. These barriers are also able to function as a reflective shield, sending attacks right back at his opponent, and can even be charged with energy to act as an omnidirectional pulse attack. Experienced ghosts, like Vlad Plasmius or Ember, have even been able to manipulate barriers to form around a target, which can only be pierced by ecto energy or a ghost’s intangible state.
Technopathy
Much like Technus, Danny is able to use his ghost powers to insert himself into technology and virtual worlds, and possess virtual avatars. In doing so, he retains all of his powers from the real world. If he were to be destroyed in one, then he will simply be ejected back out into the real world. His ecto energy is also capable of supplying power to specific types of technology, like how he made the Fenton Thermos work properly.
Personal Gravity
Danny is able to stand on walls and ceilings as if they were the ground, allowing him more mobility in battle.
Regeneration
As a ghost, Danny naturally possesses the ability to reform pieces of himself when they are cut off, smashed, or otherwise destroyed. This regeneration has allowed him to immediately recover himself after being transformed into an orange gelatinous substance and reduced to a few puddles, also doubling as a counter to any transmutation tactics. And, while he himself has never done this, comparable ghosts like the shadow of Johnny 13 have even returned from being dissipated into complete nothingness, likely owing to ghosts being emotions surrounded by ectoplasm. There does seem to be some limitations to this, though, as Kitty had her ecto body destroyed to an extent that her spirit was locked in the Ghost Zone for an extended period of time, though this seems only temporary, as she was fine leaving the Zone normally some time later.
Duplication
Taking a page from Vlad’s playbook, Danny can make up to 3 copies of himself. While initially he required the Ecto Skeleton to do so, he trained hard enough to perform it manually eventually.
Ghostly Wail
Danny’s ultimate attack in offensive power, he manifested it in a moment of dire crisis to fight back against Dark Danny, despite the latter requiring 10 years after the point Danny was at in this moment to master the technique. Despite often forcing Danny back into his base form from the energy strain, the technique can instantly knock out foes on Danny’s strength level with its supersonic potency, and even deal critical damage to foes who would otherwise demolish him in a fight. Danny eventually learned to use this ability without becoming depowered.
Ice Powers
Danny is capable of generating a cold element from himself, capable of creating icy projectiles or freezing people and objects into solid ice. He can even mix his ice powers and his ectoplasmic energy into one attack. He used this ability to counter Undergrowth's plant-based regeneration, killing off and freezing his plants. Danny can also use his ice as a barrier for himself, aim it at clouds to make it snow, or freeze the ground to create a slippery surface. Other users of the power, such as the Far Frozen, could also create constructs like ice statues and weapons, and even freeze opposing ecto energy attacks.
Power Absorption
It appears that Danny is able to absorb the energy of attacks that he is struck with, such as by Vortex's lightning. When mixed with his ecto energy, Danny is able to gain the powers of the person from said energy, adapting to attain their abilities. His newly attained control of the weather was even able to beat out Vortex's own control, the original owner of said abilities. He even used this ability in the Urban Jungle game, to absorb energy blasts of specific polarities to empower himself, along with being able to swap energy polarities within his body to do so.
Dream Immersion
A more niche variant of overshadowing, Danny is capable of entering the dreams of sleeping targets, manipulating them directly to wake them up. He may also be able to use this dreamwalking in alternate ways, but they have yet to be seen. Notably, he can use his ghost powers within dreams, including overshadowing and intangibility/invisibility. He can even bring items like the Fenton Thermos in with him.
Yusuke Urameshi
Spiritual Energy
Known as Reiki or Aura, spiritual energy is the main power source that is used by all the relevant fighters in the series and it is what comprises one's very spirit. In Yusuke’s case, he uses it to enhance the power of his punches and kicks and can harness it in a variety of long ranged attacks. Spiritual energy is directly tied to one's own emotions, the greater the emotion, the greater the spiritual energy, and Yusuke is able to recover his depleted spiritual energy with just his emotions. Yusuke's spiritual energy increases massively every time he escapes danger, sort of like a zenkai boost, but it can also increase when his friends are threatened, when the situation becomes more dangerous, or just throughout battle. As his energy increases, it amplifies not only his own physical strength but his speed as well. As a result of Genkai's training, Yusuke learned to be able to summon more energy when he's nearly depleted, emptying his mind in order to produce more latent spiritual energy even when he has completely depleted.
If one's spiritual energy is powerful enough, then merely being in the presence of such energy can melt away weaker opponents. This isn’t just a thing with Toguro, Koenma has mentioned before how getting any closer to Yusuke and Sensui during their battle would fry them due to their energy levels.
Astral Projection
Other characters in Yu Yu Hakusho can separate their spirits from their bodies. He hasn’t been shown to be able to do this at will, but Kuwabara was once able to do this in a high tense situation, and if he’s rendered unconscious then he can do this without issue. He can also do this if he, you know, dies. As a ghost, Yusuke should possess the same abilities as when he was alive, due to the fact that his abilities are all spiritually based.
Intangibility
As a ghost, Yusuke is completely intangible, and will phase straight through solid objects that he comes into contact with. Of course, Yusuke is capable of hitting other ghosts who are intangible, even as a human.
Invisibility
As a ghost, Yusuke is completely invisible to the naked mortal eye. Of course, Yusuke can see invisible ghosts just fine, even as a human. During his battle with the Ichigaki team, Yusuke was able to evolve his spiritual awareness to be able to see their invisible attacks, which were invisible even to people that can already see invisible ghosts and demons.
Flight
As a ghost, Yusuke can fly, being able to float fairly far into cloud level in the air. Once he attained his demon energy, he seemed to be able to use some level of flight even in his human form.
Possession
When he was still parading around as a ghost, Yusuke was able to possess others, having full control of their body and actions. Yusuke is only able to possess someone that he “knows” and has a strong connection or sense to the paranormal, but it is not clear what the standards for these are as Yusuke was once able to possess a random unconscious girl who he seemingly did not know. A normal person is only able to sustain 30 minutes of being possessed by a spirit, though it is unclear what happens to them if Yusuke stays in their body for longer.
Dream Immersion
If you have watched Yu Yu Hakusho, you may know that as a ghost, Yusuke can sort of appear in others dreams by talking to them as they are asleep, as those who are sleeping are closer to the spiritual plane. However, in the manga, Yusuke was able to actually enter others dreams, and in these dreams he was able to make alterations to it, including changing his own appearance and manifesting items.
Spirit Gun
Yusuke's flagship move, the Spirit Gun is capable of shooting out spiritual energy from his finger tips that can annihilate his foes. The Spirit Gun is invisible to the mortal eye, and it is twice as powerful as his physical blows.
Spirit Shotgun
By extending his fist outward, Yusuke can fire off a barrage of energy bullets all at once, which is good for taking out multiple enemies at once. Yusuke has used this technique before in order to counter Suzaku’s duplication technique.
Spirit Gun Double
A secondary version of the Spirit Gun in which Yusuke fires off two or three Spirit Gun blasts in quick succession. The 2nd shot pushes the 1st shot, adding its own power to it and making it stronger as a result.
Barrier
Yusuke can form spirit energy around himself in order to create an invisible barrier, protecting him from incoming attacks and projectiles. He is also able to form his spirit energy in such a way that he can block and reflect attacks.
Energy Expansion
If Yusuke were to increase his level of spiritual energy, he could end up releasing a large amount of energy in the process. This energy is directed outward in all directions and is capable of immediately vaporizing enemies that are in his vicinity.
Spirit Wave
An advanced technique in which Yusuke takes a stance and waits for the opponent. By using up all of his remaining Energy, Yusuke is able to channel all that power into one of two attacks. The first is a long ranged move like the standard energy blast but won’t be as strong. The second is into a direct punch onto the opponent, which is far more devastating and impactful on the opponent when it lands. The downsides of the move is that it will use up all of Yusuke’s remaining Energy and the move can be interrupted before it has a chance to be used.
Life Energy
Yusuke’s last resort. As the name suggests, the user expends their life for one last shot at defeating the opponent and once this goes kaput, the user will die unless someone can transfer some of their energy to them. Of course, Yusuke often tends to survive using his life energy anyways, because anime.
Sixth Sense
The Sixth Sense in Yu Yu Hakusho refers to the intuitive connection that a human has with the spirit world and their own spiritual essence. This allows them greater awareness of spirits, be it their presence and motivation, but it also has a more abstract effect on their intuition in of itself. Basically, a strong sixth sense allows one to detect danger and determine the correct outcome with multiple possible paths, an ethereal sense of what is right and what is not. For instance, with a strong sixth sense, one can have a better time at predicting the opponents move in rock paper scissors off of nothing more than their own vibes. Yusuke generally has a pretty terrible sixth sense, but it can still notably appear in certain situations. For example, he was once able to sense that Toguro was notably dangerous when even Kuwabara was unable to do so, and Kuwabara has an exceptionally powerful sixth sense. One time, he was also able to predict both the path of his spirit gun upon being reflected and where Hiei would jump to at the same time, despite his supposedly poor intuition.
Energy Absorption
Yusuke is able to take and absorb energy into himself to further increase his spiritual power. He's even able to take entirely different forms of energy and directly convert them into spiritual energy that he can use, so alternate energy systems aren't really an issue for him. However, Yusuke's body has to be strong enough to harness the energy that he is channeling, otherwise it may kill him.
Healing
Thanks to his training under Genkai, Yusuke has learned to be able to heal himself with his own spiritual energy. Even after being shot through his body multiple times, Yusuke can completely recover these wounds within moments.
Demon Energy
What an ironic twist, as it turns out, Yusuke was part demon all along! Thanks to his demonic bloodline, Yusuke is able to tap into an entirely new pool of energy known as demon energy. As a demon, Yusuke was able to survive having his heart stop, and seems to no longer require his heart to beat anymore to survive. Instead, he has a spiritual core that sustains him. This demon energy is significantly more powerful than his previous spiritual energy, and with it he was able to match Sensui, who was over ten times stronger than Yusuke was before he awakened to his demonic powers.
Aura Cyclone
With Yusuke’s newfound power, he was able to summon dozens of tornadoes, cyclones manifested from his spiritual energy during his battle with Sensui. These massive pillars of wind make approaching him very difficult.
Demon Form: Mazoku Yusuke
Just like Hiei and Kurama, Yusuke now has a Demon Form that he can enter thanks to his Mazoku heritage. This powered up version of Yusuke receives a massive increase to his power and speed, allowing him to decimate anyone who stands in his way. When he first accessed this form, he was able to be remotely possessed by his ancestor, Raizen, and grow out some pretty sick hair. Raizen is the demonic ancestor of Yusuke and one of the three kings, one of the three most powerful demons in the Demon World, an exceptionally skilled and strong warrior with centuries of experience.
Demon Gun
A more demonic take on his iconic Spirit Gun move. By charging up Demon Energy, he can fire it off like he would the usual Spirit Gun. Fun fact: Yusuke isn’t even the first person to use this move because Rando copied it all the way back in the beginning of the series. Yusuke can combine this Demon Gun with his own Spirit Gun attack and has switched between both repeatedly in order to bypass certain demonic based protections against his attacks.
Sacred Energy
When Yusuke combined both his Spirit and Demon Energies together, the result was a much more powerful golden energy known as Sacred Energy, the same one used by Sensui. Its power is incredible and Yusuke is the only other person known to be able to tap into such a power. It takes 40 years to acquire this form of energy, and while Sensui took 6 years to learn it, Yusuke was able to attain this in just a year of training. Sacred Energy is incredibly potent, and it is unable to be shut off by outside forces and spells while also managing to protect the user from being sealed away.

Weaknesses
Danny Phantom
Danny, for all his experience in fighting ghosts, is still rather immature at times and hasn't yet fully grown up as a hero. His powers are tied to his emotions, and without a strong emotional drive, his powers will weaken and become inoperable. Speaking of which, Danny has a limited amount of stamina, and once that's gone he will revert back to his human form. The specific plant known as blood blossom, and specific anti-ecto weaponry/ectoranium, is also far more damaging to him than human weapons, and will potentially even kill him if he is exposed to it for too long.
Yusuke Urameshi
Terrible grades in school aside, the main thing Yusuke has to worry about is his Energy. There’s only so much he has before he’s out of it, which limits his options for attacking opponents. Some moves of his like the Spirit Wave, use up a lot of it, meaning he absolutely has to make it count, putting aside that this move can also just be interrupted. There’s also the option of Life Energy as well for one more shot at beating his opponent but as the name suggests, Yusuke would essentially be throwing away his life for an all or nothing chance because once that runs out, it’s lights out for him… again.
Before the Verdict
Danny Phantom
Cosmology
The Human World
When the world was split in two after the great war, the human world became the reality without spiritual or emotional energy (at least, not the supernatural kind). This is essentially analogous to our universe, with the caveat of Danny mentioning it to be an “infinite” space of cold darkness. This is likely hyperbole, but Danny specifically is very interested in the field of space travel and astronautics, so there is potentially a small amount of credence to this.
The Ghost Zone
The flip side to the human world. The two realms are described as effectively yin and yang, to where if one world is destroyed, the other is as well. While there have been occasions where merely threatening Earth has threatened the entire Ghost Zone, implying it as merely planet size, the number of statements about the realm containing endless ectoplasm and infinite realms, and the presence of many stars within individual realm areas, along with being a flipside to the entire mortal world, hints at the zone being closer to universal, or even beyond, in scope. The realm itself is even temporally fluid to an extent, as portals into the human world from the ghost zone appear not just at different points in space, but time as well. In an uncharted region of the zone, there is the “Elsewhereness”, an Elysium-type region where ghosts can find paradise, and only one ghost has ever seen it: Sojourn, a being who scattered his notes to find this realm throughout the Ghost Zone. Despite being all over the zone, to hundreds of different ghosts’ regions, Danny had only scratched the surface of the zone by the time the Disasteroid incident concluded, meaning the zone is far larger than what we have seen, potentially multiverse sized on an infinite scale. The Ghost Zone also doesn’t follow the same flow of time throughout, as realms like Poindexter’s school or Dorathea’s kingdom exist (or did, at one point) at time periods in the distant past, like the 1950s or the 1600s, while the rest of the zone is “generally” in the 21st century. Some of these realms do have explanations behind this phenomenon, though, as Dorathea notes that the wielders of the power amulets in her realm are what controls the flow of time for said realm. This power to control individual realms is superseded by Clockwork, who embodies time across all of reality, and thus embodies time for the overall Ghost Zone, hinting at multiple layers of time in the Zone.
Regarding the nature of infinite realms, arguments have been made in the past that these realms are largely composed of portals to the human realm, rather than actual dimensions within the Ghost Zone. This is fair, as the episode titled “Infinite Realms” does have a heavy focus on portals throughout the history of the human realm, with only sparse focus on actual places within the Ghost Zone. In terms of actual ghost realms, we only have a confirmed million or so different ghosts within the zone, far less than the requirement for being a multiversal+ construct. At best, the Ghost Zone would be an infinite space with an overarching temporal axis, said space being peppered with about a million different unique space-time continuums in the form of ghost realms, said realms being anywhere from island sized to stellar in scope. We know these are space-time continuums, because the final battle of Glitch in Time shows Dark Danny, Danny, and Vlad flying through about a dozen different doors within the Ghost Zone, said doors being revealed as full timestreams after the fight, and the doors looking notably similar to the doors ghost realms occupy. So, potentially some degree of multiversal, but at least universal+.
The Zone also debatably connects to Fairy World.
Unworld
An unexplored “limbo” dimension between the human and ghost worlds, reached if any manmade ghost zone portals are not calibrated to the exact coordinates of the ghost zone. In this zone, this “nightmare dimension”, denizens lack both human and ghost abilities, and are effectively stuck permanently. As this dimension exists for every coordinate “except” those of the Ghost Zone, it implies Unworld is larger than the Ghost Zone to a degree.
Nightmare Dimension
A realm that entities struck by the Soul Shredder are sent to. Not much is known abwout it, although it does at least contain a small island and surrounding body of water.
The Curious Case of Cosmic Danny Phantom
So recently, it’s gone around that Danny Phantom’s cosmic power level is, let’s say greatly exaggerated. Certainly, there are a multitude of feats in the series that on paper are extremely impressive. So, how well do they hold up under scrutiny?
Ghosts and their realms
As we see at multiple points, ghosts have their own realms they occupy, realms that have the same ectoplasmic signature that they do. This is relevant in two ways.
Ghostly Black Holes
When two ghost realms of different ectoplasmic signatures collide, the result is a ghostly black hole, which consumes everything in its wake. That said, this is fairly easy to cover. Nothing about these black holes are described as being created through the actual power of ghostly energy, rather just a chain reaction of opposing energies mixing. These black holes have also never been encountered by Danny, so he would have no way of scaling to them anyway, assuming they met any qualifications to be legitimate black holes.
Ghosts repairing their realms
As mentioned in Reign Storm, Pariah Dark had gone around destroying the realms of every ghost, and the ghosts had to go back and fix their realms, presumably with their own ectoplasm, as a result. One of these ghosts is Poindexter, who as we see in an early episode, has his realm located in a mirror of Casper High surrounded by a few stars. Does this mean Poindexter is actually some sort of star-creating god?
Well, likely not. Whenever the concept of ghost realms pops up in the show, it’s usually just in reference to a single notable landmark in the realm, rather than the entire space around the realm. Be it Skulker’s island, Dorathea’s castle, Poindexter’s high school, Pariah’s Keep, etc. They never draw attention to the celestial elements, so there’s nothing saying these elements had to be remade. The timeframe of remaking these realms is also never stated. At most, Pariah would likely have to destroy realms like Skulker’s island very quickly to be able to destroy hundreds of ghost homes within an hour like the episode suggests, so Danny is downscaling that destruction level to a vague degree.
The Reality Gauntlet
In its only episode, the gauntlet is portrayed as extremely powerful. A weapon that, if used in certain ways, would have the potential to wipe out ghosts forever, according to the Guys in White. A weapon that seemingly created stars out of nowhere. And a weapon that kind of claps Danny in every appearance it has. So, let’s go through it.
In most instances where the Reality Gauntlet is used for fighting, it primarily relies on manipulating the environment or methods that aren’t conventional attacking. However, it is occasionally used for physical strikes as well. Danny gets struck by the gauntlet physically on two occasions. The first time is when Freakshow had already activated two gems, the gem of life and gem of form. After activating the Form Gem, he notes that the gauntlet’s power has “doubled”, implying a sort of multiplicative effect on the gems. So, does that mean Danny downscales from the total power of the gauntlet?
Well, probably not in terms of just this episode. While the gauntlet has been shown to handle the gems’ energy running through it, there’s nothing demonstrating this requires any sort of enhanced durability on the gauntlet’s part, and the gauntlet in general is shown to have its gems be greater than the sum of their parts, as the reality manipulation the completed gauntlet showcased is many orders of magnitude more potent than what Freakshow did with the gems individually, being planet-scale reality warping compared to the singular gem of form at most warping a small festival.
But what about the second instance, where Freakshow hit Danny with the gauntlet after activating its full power? This one is more debatable, but still likely not hitting Danny with the totality of the energy, seeing as the gauntlet isn’t even glowing with power here.
What about Pariah Dark, then? It’s stated that he’s the only ghost who can handle the power of the Ring of Rage and Crown of Fire together, hypothetically scaling him above Freakshow’s ghost form, which could handle wielding the reality gauntlet.
Well, sadly, this doesn’t hold up, as there are no special requirements to wield the reality gauntlet. Human Freakshow, who is really nothing above an average human in power level, could handle wielding the gauntlet. Not to mention, Ghost Freakshow existed after Pariah, so there’s no reason to say the statement applies here.
That said, in the game “Freak for All”, Danny is able to defeat Freakshow in a 1v1 fight, while the latter is amplified by the full power of the reality gauntlet that could “distort reality”, although this inconsistency with the episode could cause it to be considered an outlier.
There is one other argument, being that the Crown of Fire and Ring of Rage together make their user “omnipotent”, something that was never stated about the reality gauntlet…at least not directly. It’s stated that the gauntlet can control all reality by Freakshow, and “destroy all ghosts” by the Guys in White, which could imply that it’s on a similar or greater tier of power compared to full power Pariah. It’s hard to tell, but Ecto Skeleton Danny is at least able to fight somewhat evenly with full-power Pariah, so he may also be able to scale to the Reality Gauntlet’s full potential.
That said, is the Reality Gauntlet really “that” powerful?
While it did turn the daytime sky into a nighttime sky full of stars, this could easily be chalked up to multiple different reasons. Perhaps Freakshow just rotated the planet instantly. Perhaps he used time manipulation to skip ahead to night. As the controller of all reality, and able to turn fantasy into reality, these would hypothetically be in his power set.
The Guys in White have also notoriously been seen with gaps in their ghost knowledge, most notably when they were completely unaware that their “ghost zone destroying missile” would explode into bubblegum goop in the human world. So, their belief about artifacts that can destroy the ghost zone is questionable.
As for the Gauntlet warping the planet, most of what it does, like changing Mount Rushmore, altering the Golden Gate Bridge, and replacing plants, is more so hax rather than physical power, so there’s not much for Danny to physically scale to.
Overall, Danny scaling to the gauntlet is dubious at best, and what the gauntlet does showcase in power is either not scalable attack power or potentially fraudulent hype statements from unreliable sources.
Clockwork
The master of time himself, Clockwork is a very interesting case to tackle. He is, given his stature as the embodiment of time, one of the strongest ghosts in the series. Case in point, Dark Danny believed that out of every ghost still active during his second release, that Clockwork was the only one who could stand a chance against him, putting him above ghosts like Vortex and Undergrowth. Even earlier in the series, the Observants, a sect of ghosts who were able to use their resources to imprison Vortex, knew that Clockwork was the best one to take out Danny before he became Dark Danny. And his feats definitely serve to back that up. He can compress timestreams, create pieces of timelines, and his power when combined with Dark Danny threatened to collapse time itself! His feats are not in question, moreso how he does them. As in, he does them via strictly time manipulation hax. Let’s talk about it.
Just to get it out of the way, the fight with Dark Danny in Glitch in Time shows Danny is now relative to a Clockwork fusion in power without the Ecto Skeleton, and he can fight Clockwork and Dark Danny in the Ultimate Enemy game, so scaling should be fine
Clockwork’s feats are via attack power
As previously mentioned, Clockwork’s innate physiology is that of the embodiment of time. His mere existence is a sustainment of time, to the point that when his essence was disrupted and stifled, time itself began to collapse. This is relevant because a ghost’s essence is largely contained within their ectoplasm, and their ectoplasm is what is used to fuel their attacks. This means the same essence Clockwork uses to stabilize time, is what he uses to attack with, as a sort of universal energy system.
Even when Clockwork is doing feats that seemingly are contingent on pure time manipulation, he always mixes them with ectoplasm and ecto energy. Be it his timestream compression, or him creating a new staff. To make his new staff, which was a piece of the timeline itself, Clockwork couldn’t just merge his time medallions together. He had to infuse his own ecto energy into it, completing the process and creating a new piece of the timeline directly.
More notably, Clockwork was the other ghost besides Vlad who withstood the shockwave given off by his staff breaking. His physical durability was to the point that he could withstand effectively a portion of the timeline exploding in his face, and was only barely winded. Vlad is, of course, not on Clockwork’s level at this point, but he is one of the strongest ghosts in the series, so him being able to tank this sort of feat makes sense as well.
Clockwork’s feats are via non-physical time manipulation
That said, Clockwork does do the majority of his abilities with his staff, and his staff is seen being created by merging his time medallions together. These medallions, notably, have no physical power, and are purely abilities-focused, granting a spate of time manipulation and timeline reset protection abilities, rather than physical stat amps.
The series also goes out of its way to highlight Clockwork always as “the master of time” whenever he makes an appearance, as if highlighting his temporal prowess above his physical stats. Even when Clockwork was merged with Dark Danny, making their combined power far above either individually, the power was only registered as “atomic bomb” level readings, and yet that power was still capable of eventually destroying the entire ghost zone. “Atomic bomb” level may be a metaphor, but it would fall in line with the majority of Danny Phantom feats, which tend to be at a city destroying level.
How strong would Clockwork be?
At minimum, we know Clockwork’s powers work on a scale encompassing planets. His final act in Glitch in Time, which we see he can do quickly, is compressing multiple timestreams into two different timelines, which he created by, in his own words, “mending a dam”, effectively taking already existing timelines with some cracks and patching them up with these compressed timestreams. Of these two timelines, one of them, the one Danny picks, is a timeline where his secret is no longer known, a secret that everyone on the planet knew as a result of the Disasteroid incident, meaning Clockwork had to work on a planet wide scale in this instance.
As a result, Clockwork’s staff, which is a piece of the timeline, likely also works on at least a planet wide scale, as performing a planet range timeline creation was the first thing Clockwork’s newly created staff could do. Which means Clockwork and Vlad survived effectively a planet-sized timeline piece exploding in their face, knocking them back.
While Clockwork’s control over time likely does extend to a scale encompassing the whole Ghost Zone, as he is the embodiment of time for the entire timestream, which includes the human and ghost universes, we know for a fact he cannot output full-Ghost Zone level energy restoration at any one time. He makes it very clear at the end of Glitch in Time that fixing the entire timestream and all the damage Dark Danny did will be a very long, involved process, which wouldn’t make sense if he could instantly fix time on a complete scale.
As a result, Clockwork’s immediate power he can use in fights would likely cap at around baseline Planet level, assuming it scaled to his attack power. If you consider the Dark Danny/Clockwork fusion being able to destroy the entire Ghost Zone with its presence as a legitimate feat, discounting the “atomic bomb” statement as just metaphorical, then Dark Danny/Clockwork together would be scaling to at least universal+, potentially some degree of multiversal via overtime destruction, due to the ghost Zone being an infinite space with over a million realms/timestreams.
The Great War
But we aren’t done with Glitch in Time. As revealed in the story, at the beginning of existence there was no Ghost Zone. There was no Human Realm. There was one world, one sky, one voice. Then, chaos and darkness descended. The ensuing war was so devastating, reality could not handle it, and split in twain. Half of it, the half that could withstand the roiling emotions of the old world, became a place of spirituality, the Ghost Zone. The other half, the human realm. Naturally, the oldest beings, the ones who caused the War, would effectively scale to both the Human and Ghost Zones, as the beings who created them via splitting an existing world.
So, does this apply to Danny? Eh, debatable but leaning no. While Pariah was the strongest ghost in his time, that time came after this war, and no one interacted with the original beings when they were one that also interacted with Danny. That, and while Pariah is stronger than any *one* ghosts, *seven* of them were soundly enough to defeat him with both the crown *and* ring, so an entire army of fighters, likely on a similar level to the Seven, would almost certainly have been too much.
The Ghost Zone Missile
In the episode ‘Livin Large’, the Guys in White plan to shoot a missile into the Ghost Zone, destroying it forever. If true, this would likely be at least planetary, if not universal, given the size of the zone.
That said, Danny never takes this missile head on, instead relying on blocking it from entering the zone altogether. The Guys didn’t know the missile would turn into goop upon exploding in the human world, so their confidence in the missile being able to destroy the ghost zone is likely unfounded, or at least exaggerated. And the missile is not a ghost, so there’s no upscaling Danny can do here by scaling to Pariah.
Ghostwriter Moon
Finally, the Christmas special introduced a character known as the Ghost Writer. His power hinges on trapping ghosts within a poem, with the poem being less of a story within the world, and more manipulating the world itself, as Danny exists on the same plane as the writer. Notably, he does this manipulation of the world via his keyboard, which he seemingly summons using his ecto powers. This makes sense, as we have seen multiple ghosts conjure up their power sources and weapons using their ecto energy (even after they are damaged), like Ember with her guitar, or Technus with his lightning rod. That said, the Ghost Writer was unable to recreate his keyboard when Danny destroyed it, which could also imply that the keyboard isn’t something he conjured. It’s up in the air.
As for why it’s relevant, at one point the Writer imprints his face on the moon, using it to watch over the story, and notably, moving the moon itself as he talks. Near the end of the story, Danny encounters the writer himself, not only defeating him with ease, but also smashing his keyboard. We also see Danny fight ghosts who are, through statements and showings against other ghosts, stronger than any other ghost in the entire zone (i.e. Pariah Dark and Dark Danny), so that may be an argument for scaling to the Ghost Writer regardless.
However, as the Ghost Writer uses a keyboard and not his own ghost attacks, it could be argued that Pariah and Dark Danny don’t scale to the potency of said keyboard. Still, Clockwork scaling does make it somewhat consistent, so again this is up for debate.
Conclusion
Out of these, Clockwork’s feats, and debatably the Ghost Writer’s, are the only ones that could feasibly be considered valid. Whether they are valid, and whether they qualify as outliers or not, will be discussed in the verdicts below by whomever deems it necessary.
Vortex scaling
For the most part, Danny has a way to scale to every ghost in the series that we know of, either through a direct fight with them, or upscaling from other ghosts. However, there is one potential exception, that being Vortex, the weather ghost who makes a planetary storm.
While Danny does fight Vortex twice, the most he was able to boast with his own power was blocking Vortex’s attacks with a ghost shield, taking hits from Vortex, and blasting away a heavily weakened Vortex. Danny doesn’t actually outmuscle Vortex at any point, and in fact his second fight has him embarrassed by the weather ghost before Masters Blasters show up. So, what’s the deal?
Well, in terms of the series itself, there is really no way to directly scale Base Danny to Vortex. Even though Vlad was able to cause Vortex mild pain with a ghost ray, it was a sneak attack, so Vortex likely wasn’t prepared to tank it. When Vortex actually pays attention, he decimates both Danny and Vlad with minimal effort. Masters Blasters also don’t scale, as their strategy revolved around redirecting his attacks.
Some might bring up Dark Danny and Clockwork, but in context of the show their scaling is dubious as well. They are considered the most powerful active ghosts at the time, but Vortex is decisively not active, being contained by the Observants in an inescapable prison, so there’s no way to confirm their power level vs Vortex’s. Dark Danny also came before Vortex in episode order, so Dark Danny being the “ultimate enemy” at the time doesn’t hold up.
That said, regarding the montage, the actual truth of how far behind Danny is compared to Vortex may have been exaggerated, as the montage also shows him losing badly to ghosts like Technus and Undergrowth, who Danny did defeat in prior episodes. So, there likely was some exaggeration for the sake of the plot making Danny look worse as a ghost fighter compared to Masters’ Blasters, and we see Danny defeat Undergrowth again in a comic, so take the montage with some skepticism.
That said, Pariah scaling is likely fine, as Vortex has surely existed for enough time for Skulker to lump him in as ghosts that are weaker than Pariah with the crown and ring. But this would only result in Danny being vaguely above 100x weaker than Vortex.
This does change in Glitch in Time however, as Vortex is no longer chained by the Observants, and Dark Danny confirms outright that Clockwork is the only ghost who could stand up to him, even in base form. As a result, their fusion, which was literally tearing apart the Ghost Zone in its entirety, a feat that surpasses any of Vortex’s, should be above Vortex. In the story, Valerie tanks a full power ghostly wail from the fusion, and Danny and Vlad defeat said fusion in combat with their emotional drive (albeit it was weakened from the energy strain of keeping Clockwork in line). So, by the end of Glitch in Time, Danny should be relative to Vortex in base.
Ghost Ray = Lightspeed?
Yeah, gotta cover this too.
There is an argument to be made that Danny’s signature attack, the ghost ray, is in fact a lightspeed beam. To address the counterarguments:
The beams have concussive force: Only when Danny wishes them to be. On other occasions, the beams have merely been photokinetic flashes, or straight line beams that heat up what they come in contact with, like Box Lunch’s sauce packet.
The beams curve: Again, primarily when Danny wishes it with techniques like ghost stinger. Otherwise, they tend to be generally straight.
The beams explode: Third verse, same as the first. Really, the fact that ghost rays are in fact generated by ectoplasmic energy, the universal energy system of the series, gives them license to be used in many different forms, and also have a form where they are lightspeed. Speaking of which…
As previously mentioned, Danny uses his ghost rays as a light source on at least 2 occasions. One to light up a dark room, and another to weaken Johnny’s Shadow, which is explicitly weak to bright light. He even uses a magnifying glass to concentrate his ghost ray into a diffusing beam, again much like light through a prism. And finally, the beams have, on several occasions, been shown to deflect from different materials (like during the Wisconsin Proto Portal experiment), heat up objects (like Box Lunch’s soy packet), and travel in a straight line (like all the time). As such, it is fair to err on the side of ghost rays being legitimate lightspeed attacks, but come to your own conclusion given the existing anti-feats across the different ghost ray forms. It can still be argued against, but the thing is… The creator, Butch Hartman, has directly agreed with ghost rays moving at the speed of light in his Death Battle reaction video. Ironically, one can say that Death Battle giving this a charitable interpretation ended up giving more weight to this argument
MFTL+ Danny?
Similarly to the cosmic power level feats, Danny’s massively faster than light scaling has also been contested. Much of it, as you’d expect, hinges on crossing large portions of the ghost zone, which is surprisingly consistent in the series. So, how much of it is valid?
Danny crossing half of the Ghost Zone
Back to the aforementioned ‘Livin Large’, Danny gets spit out of Vlad’s portal at Pariah’s keep, and he remarks that he’s “halfway across the Ghost Zone”.
So, on the surface, this just seems like a throwaway line, with Danny using just some sentences to remark on how far away he is. However, we do get a slight bit more information in "Glitch in Time”, as the Seven (the ghosts who defeated Pariah in the ancient past) reveal his keep as “the first broken ground”. This could be referring to how they themselves split the keep from the rest of the Ghost Zone by destroying the stone around it, but with the context of revealing how the universe itself was split in two, that could be remarking how Pariah’s Keep was in fact, the site where the split first happened, which would make the keep effectively the central point where the ghost zone began. It is also consistent with how the keep contains the “Source”, the path to obtaining the ultimate source of ghost energy, and one of the oldest parts of the Ghost Zone.
If one does accept the Ghost Zone as being infinite in size, then of course this feat would effectively be half of infinite speed, or infinite speed. But even assuming this is just a universe we’re dealing with, or even just half of one, the feat would already be a little over 4 quadrillions times the speed of light to cross half the zone in the time of 1 and a half minutes Danny took.
The EXE Style Feats
We also have several feats of characters who crisscross the Ghost Zone, traveling into each individual realm. These include Danny doing so in the Fenton Jet during Phantom Planet, Pariah doing so to all the ghosts’ realms in Reign Storm, and the unexplored Sojourn mapping out the “entire” Ghost Zone. A notable thing about all of these, is that they are done without visible teleportation. While ghosts can naturally teleport in the series, the three ghosts mentioned earlier do not, at least when performing the feats. The closest to teleportation is Pariah, as he appears as a cloud of smoke to talk to Danny while being in Pariah’s Keep, but he showcases no destructive potential in this form that would enable him to destroy the realms of the ghosts like he’s been stated to.
Sojourn’s feat at least is very easy to calculate, as he would either be infinite in speed or very high into the faster than light tier, assuming he did see every single realm the zone has to offer, but the entire event being offscreen lore does make it hard to determine if that’s the case, so it is more supporting evidence at best.
With Pariah and Danny, they at least affect a couple hundred of the ghosts’ realms, of which there have been stated to be about a million on two separate occasions, meaning at least .01% of the Ghost Zone was covered here. This does line up nicely with Butch stating that Danny has “only scratched the surface” of what the Ghost Zone contains. Even if all of these realms were perfectly lined up, crossing that much of the ghost zone would still be about 4.65 million light years to cover, which Pariah performed in at most a day, but likely an hour given how quickly into the episode the ghosts flee from the Ghost Zone. This means that Pariah, without the ring of rage, was going at least 1.7-40.77 billion times the speed of light. Even if Danny normally is only a hundredth of that speed due to the Ecto Skeleton, he’s still capable of speeds around 17 million-407.7 million c. Keep in mind, Pariah also had to be keeping track of wherever a ghost’s realm was during this time, so he couldn’t just be flying in straight lines without reacting to anything. As such, this should scale to Danny’s flight and reaction speed, given he directly flew to Pariah’s Keep with the Ecto Skeleton.
Counterargument 1: Ghosts can teleport
Throughout the series, we do see that multiple ghosts seemingly have the ability to teleport, or at least appear out of thin air. Pariah Dark, as the ghost king, likely would have this ability as well, meaning that he at least has a way to travel between all the ghost realms without physically flying.
With that said, Johnny 13’s bike hasn’t been shown teleporting at any point beyond dimensional travel via equipment, and actually teleporting to the Fenton portal to stop the missile would have been far more productive than driving there, demonstrating that it likely does not have the ability, and thus making that feat still valid. Technically, Pariah’s only use of multilocation didn’t actually have him attack anyone, merely appearing as a smoke projection to talk to Danny. That, and he would have to actively know where all the realms of characters like Ember, Skulker, Poindexter, etc. are to teleport to them, which also makes no sense for a ghost entombed in sleep for millennia. As such, the odds of him teleporting to every realm are unlikely. We also know for a fact the Fenton Jet cannot teleport, so Danny’s version of this feat is also fine. This does extend into…
Counterargument 2: Ghost realms are bundled together
We also see throughout the series that there are sectors of the ghost zone where dozens, or even hundreds of ghosts’ realms are clumped together, meaning that Pariah wouldn’t actually have to travel that much in order to reach hundreds of ghost realms.
That said, many of these ghost realms are for generic, one-off ghosts, and we see that realms like Skulker’s Island and Klemper’s lair are largely isolated from each other, meaning that Pariah would still have to go out of his way to reach them, along with not knowing they exist beforehand, meaning he’d have to stumble across them by flying. This also largely does not affect Johnny’s motorcycle speed, as that’s just doing a straight line. Speaking of…
Counterargument 3: Many of these are non-reaction based flight speed
This is likely the case for something like Johnny 13’s motorcycle feat, as Danny is mostly just flying in a straight line to reach the Fenton portal. However, we do see Skulker react to the cycle as it flies by in order to shoot it as a skeet target. That said, this is probably more akin to seeing a plane fly through the sky, obviously humans cannot go as fast as an airplane but the distance and field of view means we can perceive it anyway. Danny does also match Johnny’s motorcycle in speed at multiple points, though.
The same arguments of flight speed are not as easy to level at the Pariah, Sojourn, or Fenton Jet feats, as Danny, Pariah and Sojourn have to constantly be on the lookout for ghost realms in order to stop at them and go inside. Danny has it easier by virtue of having a map so he doesn’t have to pay *as* much attention, but the same is not true for Sojourn and Pariah. As such, they have to both fly at these speeds, and react to ghost realms simultaneously, and the ghost realms are *far* smaller than something like a planet or an asteroid from the outside, so they would not be able to see them from far away to stop in time
Counterargument 4: Danny’s flight speed is narratively calculated at levels far below lightspeed
When doing a test on Danny’s speed, Tucker notes he’s going at 112 mph when Danny is trying to go as fast as possible. Later on, he’s using a booster rocket that takes you into space in 2 minutes as an amplifier to reach space at all.
That said, these are not narrative caps in the same vein as, say, Inamuta noting the impossibility of lightspeed, or…that set of panels, from JJK Modulo. They are just moments in the story where numbers are directly stated, and don’t stop all potential speeds above them. The booster rocket thing gets contradicted by Valerie doing a similar feat with her regular board, which Danny can keep up with later on.
Counterargument 5: Is this an outlier?
Admittedly, being millions, quadrillions, or infinite times lightspeed is definitely beyond what many speeds in the verse get to, such as going 112 mph, hypersonic, or traveling from Jupiter to Earth in a few hours. 2 or even 3 statements and offscreen feats of going heavily above lightspeed may not be enough. It is ultimately subjective.
Conclusion
MFTL+ Danny Phantom is something that has overall more ground to stand on, but is ultimately still debatable, and thoughts on it will be given at the discretion of parties below.
How viable is Fenton Works equipment?
Throughout the series, Danny’s family constantly invents specific anti-ghost equipment, many of which have been listed, and many being slotted into the miscellaneous section. Many of these are one-off tools with little elaboration, or items that Danny could have used but never did, mostly because his parents did.
To clear something up, Danny should absolutely know how to use the majority of this equipment. He directly stated that he knows how to operate all the Fenton Works gear, and his allies have used said gear to great effect against other ghosts, despite not coming from a ghost hunting family. In the Ghost Frenzy game, it even states directly he has the full Fenton arsenal to use.
Going in hierarchy, Danny’s most used piece of equipment is definitely the Fenton Thermos, a device that sucks in ghosts of almost any power level, even if they’re stronger than Danny, and traps them from using their powers to escape. The Thermos *can* be broken from the inside, but this is very rare, only happening with the strongest ghosts, and only when the Thermos is jostled from the outside. It’s a very potent tool for ending fights, but Danny has recently been a little hesitant to use it, as it goes against his desire to be a “bridge between human and ghost”. Still, he has expressed a willingness to use the device if absolutely necessary, which a deathmatch qualifies as.
Up next is second string equipment. These include the Fenton Fisher, Fenton Phones, the Specter Deflector, the Boooomerang, and the Ecto Bazooka. Out of these, the Specter Deflector and Ecto Bazooka are likely the most valuable, being able to both weaken ghosts and banish them via portals back to the ghost zone. While Danny has not personally done the latter, we see that the Bazookas have both options implanted in them during the Walker takeover, so it’s fair to say Fenton Works at least has some of this bazooka type.
Below that is the niche tools. These include one-offs Danny has personally used like the Fenton Foamer and Ghost Gloves, which both increase Danny’s stats and counter any sort of ghost possession, assuming his built in resistance doesn’t already cut it. Also in this group is the extremely useful Fenton Crammer, a device that shrinks targets down to the size of fleas, and also slowly disables all spectral abilities. Pretty useful, especially considering it works on humans and inanimate objects.
Then comes everything else, which is mostly variants of beam weapons or tracking equipment that aren’t that useful here. The one exception is, of course, the Fenton Atomizer, a tool that instantly decomposes ghosts to their most primal emotional state, preventing them from regenerating their bodies despite their ability to regenerate ectoplasmic bodies from nothingness. While this is incredibly useful, and would end the fight since Yusuke can’t regenerate on that level or possess Danny due to resistances, sadly Danny did not actually use this device before Valerie took it.
Realistically, Danny would only bring the first two categories of gear into a fight right away, but if he was able to access Fenton Works, he would know how to use everything in the remaining categories, barring one-off inventions chained to the lab which are too cumbersome to remove anyway.
How many ghost abilities apply to halfas?
Naturally, as a half-ghost Danny is not exactly like other ghosts. Case in point, while a lightning rod constructed from Technus’ ectoplasm is stated by Vlad Masters to grant “endless power”, Danny notably has finite stamina and will revert to ghost form upon too much strain. So, clearly Danny doesn’t possess all the powers of a ghost exactly, but most of the abilities listed above should still apply. Danny is still a ghost with an emotional drive, so he should be able to continuously boost his power with higher emotional peaks, like Ember did when receiving strength from chanting. Danny and other ghosts have been able to turn themselves into an energy form without a skeleton, so Danny’s regen should be on par with ghosts that can reform their bodies from nothing but their aura (like Nocturne), or ghosts that have been able to regenerate from tiny pieces or even complete body destruction (like the Sleepwalkers), as his human biology clearly does not apply as a weakness to the limits of the ghost form. Aside from stamina, Danny’s ghost form is by and large similar to other ghosts in physiology, with only unique ghost powers like full shapeshifting from Amorpho, musical abilities from Ember, soul BFR from the Fright Knight, plant/sleep spore creation and mass-scale weather manipulation from Undergrowth and Vortex, etc. being locked off to him. Some resistances other ghosts have could also be feasibly applied to Danny, like a resistance to Wulf’s space-time cutting claws, due to the fact multiple ghosts weaker than Danny also share this resistance. Danielle’s stamina feat also likely applies to Danny, by virtue of Danielle being an imperfect Danny clone.

Cosmology
Human World
The Human World is the main reality where the series takes place. It is just our universe, and contains Earth where every human lives. The Human World is a focal point in the cosmology where the Spirit World governs and takes their souls, and where connections to the Demon World are made, so demons often enter the Human World to hunt for humans for food.
Spirit World
The Spirit World, or Underworld, exists above the Human World, both realms being parallel as they balance each other in a cosmological scale. When a human dies, they are taken to the Spirit World by a Spirit Guide where they are to spend the rest of their eternity in one of separate, branching worlds based upon their actions in life. Time seems to operate differently in Spirit World compared to the Human World, suggesting that it works under its own timeline.
Demon World
The Demon World exists below the Human World and is where demons, or yokai, reside. The Demon World is layered and contains immensely powerful demons of which are far stronger than what the Spirit World can fight against. According to the official dub, the Demon World is infinite in size, while the original Japanese refers to it as endless.
Netherworld
The Netherworld is a dimension that used to exist, like the Human World, Spirit World and Demon World before it was destroyed by King Enma. Like the relationship between the Human World and Spirit World, the Netherworld directly parallels and balances the Demon World. It was the residence of Yakumo, who wanted to transform the Human World into a new Netherworld, until Yusuke kicked his butt.
Hyper-Space
Hyper-Space is the space that exists between dimensions in Yu Yu Hakusho, acting as a sort of bulk space between dimensions. This is where the barriers between worlds are located. When referring to their relation to the human world, the Spirit World and the Demon World are referred to as parallel planes of existence, similar to the faces of a die.
Is the Spirit Orb star level?
Genkai refers to the Spirit Orb in the official English translation as having energy equivalent to a tiny star, but that isn't all there is to it. In the original Japanese manga, Genkai just refers to it as having energy similar to a small star, and the Blu-Ray Spirit World Dictionary says that it has energy comparable to a small star. In order for a celestial body to be considered a star, it must be large enough to sustain hydrogen fusion, which would be about 8% of our own sun's mass, so the Spirit Orb must be able to at least match this.
I have seen arguments that it should be calculated as a star based on the Spirit Orb's size, but this is a misunderstanding of the feat. This is not like FMA Father's miniature star, nowhere is the Spirit Orb stated to be a star itself - only that it has energy equivalent to one. This did take place in the Dark Tournament when Yusuke was a B-Class, but it is not actually all that inconsistent when you consider that the events of Poltergeist Report take place before Chapter Black, meaning when Yusuke was still a B-Class. In it, he was able to withstand and match power capable of destroying the Human World and recreating the Netherworld.
Yusuke was able to withstand the energy of the Spirit Orb and then absorb it, so he should obviously scale to this level of power. If you wanted to apply multipliers and upscaling and whatnot to it, then most methods would get Yusuke up to around star level by the end of the series.
Lightspeed Spirit Gun?
As surprising as this may be, it is actually very well arguable that the Spirit Gun, and several other, similar spiritual attacks are composed of pure light, and thus would move at speeds relative to the speed of light. Let's cover this all, piece by piece.
First off, the thing that everyone knows. In Yusuke’s first battle with Hiei, he fired a spirit gun at him which then reflected off of a mirror to hit Hiei in the back. Yusuke later explained that he did this by banking on the Spirit Gun having similar physical properties to that of light that it would reflect off of mirrors, so this is clearly a very intentional moment to compare Yusuke's spirit energy to that of light. Of course, the mirror does crack as a result of the Spirit Gun reflecting off of it, which is the main point people use to argue against it. But we also know that Yusuke’s Spirit Gun is empowered with however much energy his spirit gives off, and it is not impossible for lasers and other modes of light to have high enough concentration that they emulate something akin to force, some real life lasers can sometimes do this. It's not so different from other light projectiles that have been accepted as lightspeed in recent times, despite the fact that they exert force.
If this were the only piece of evidence for spiritual energy being light, then it may be dismissed, but there is more than that. Another low level character, Musashi, is shown to manifest his spiritual energy into what is referred to as photons, in other words, light particles. This energy attack isn't really so different from other examples of spiritual energy attacks used by other characters, such as Yusuke, further substantiating that spiritual energy is light. Genkai also manifests her spiritual energy as light, which Yusuke reacts to in the anime, and perhaps most importantly, when Genkai reflected Shishi's aura back at him, her attack was referred to as reflecting spirit light. This would suggest that spiritual energy, aura, is in fact light, and as such it should move at the speed of light.

It's that time again. I'd like to thank everyone for reading this far in, this matchup is pretty important for me as it is one that I have been into for a pretty long time and involves two series that I personally really like. Back when I made Death Battle scripts on DeviantArt this is one of the ones that I made, so this is technically a re-analysis for me. This is usually the part where I list off the connections for a matchup, so here we go.
Danny and Yusuke were both 14 year old outcasts in school who, upon a freak accident, turned into ghosts. After this, they both attained spiritual/ghostly powers and began using them to pursue evil spirits that come from another dimension, which were being connected to via a portal. They are both cocky and joking, and they both often use their wits to outsmart their opponents. Both of them have had to face the prospect of potentially using their powers for nefarious purposes and destroying everything, and both of them fought a reflection of this sort of potential, with Sensui and Dark Danny (and I guess also Vlad, point is accountability for their power is a theme with both of them). Both of their spiritual powers are directly linked to their emotions and correlates to how powerful they can be, with both being able to get stronger in a fight due to it. Both of them are also weakened by the lack of it, and both of them were weakened at one point because they felt that they had no more purpose in fighting after defeating all their important foes, and both regained their power when they realized that their purpose in fighting was for their friends and loved ones. At the end of their stories, both of them no longer sought to fight against the evil spirits that they battled against, instead intending to seek peace with them and even protect them if need be.
I think that the recent Danny Phantom comics really help with the themes here. In addition to this, I really like the vibe that it has. It can be pretty aesthetically casual, but become serious when it needs to be. I also like the power interaction potential, Danny has a lot of cool ghost powers and powers that directly relate to souls and emotions that would be neat to see Yusuke interact with, and both of them are also obviously pretty clever fighters, I think there is a lot you can do with this. I kinda hope Yusuke comes back to Death Battle after fighting Ichigo, I think this matchup would be cool to see.
Anyways, onto who wins, starting with everyone's favorite category, power.
Finding out the exact upper limits of both of their power has been pretty tricky. Neither of their series are exactly famous for having easy powerscaling. What isn't difficult to tell, however, is that on a consistent, base level, the world of Yu Yu Hakusho is generally far more impressive than what goes on in Danny Phantom. Dorathea is able to disperse clouds with her breath, which can get into the kilotons, but Yusuke can match and surpass that with any of his old spirit guns just by visual display alone. Perhaps you are one of those people who want to argue that Danny can compare with Vortex, who created a storm that covered the planet, or Fright Knight who could do the same thing. Even granting that level of scaling… Yusuke can blow up the planet, which is obviously far more impressive than covering the planet with a storm. If that is where your opinion on Danny Phantom stats end, then you could stop reading here. Yusuke street bullies Danny, and after he's done, he's after Daredevil and the Wonderpets.
Of course, if you want to get deep into it, there is much more going on here. One potential higher end for Danny is comparing him to the Ghostwriter, who with his powers, was able to rotate the moon. It's a little weird, given that he accomplishes this with his typewriter, however everything that a ghost does is an extension of themselves and their own energies. Ghosts are pure manifestations of emotions and concepts that surround them, and the typewriter is an extension of Ghostwriter's own existence, so the argument does exist that the energy to do what he does with the typewriter is an extension of the Ghostwriter's own ghost energy. By doing a lot of weird math I haven't had to do until now, we find that the energy to rotate the moon in the way that he does would have to equate to nearly 10 yottatons of TNT, which is significantly more than what is needed to destroy a planet, and enough to at bare minimum put Danny on par with Yusuke, if not surpass him. Is what I would say if Yusuke didn't withstand and absorb the energy of an entire star, which means he withstood and absorbed at least 10 quettatons of TNT, a million times more than the Ghostwriter feat. In short, Danny isn't matching up to Yusuke's raw power any time soon.
This is all ignoring the timestream sized elephant in the room, however. Clockwork, another ghost, is capable of compressing timestreams and in effect resulting in the creation of new ones. Danny scaling to Clockwork directly may be tricky, but with the Ecto Skeleton he can fight Pariah Dark, who is the strongest Ghost in the Ghost Zone. Although, granting this feat is somewhat questionable. There's a pretty solid case you can make that this feat doesn't translate to physical power, Clockwork was essentially manipulating time to perform this feat and there was only one main timeline in Danny Phantom in the first place, so it's not like he was pulling universes together. Even then, it's likely this feat was not universal in scale. Clockwork was unable to immediately fix every problem within the timeline without further, well, time, which doesn't make sense if he can just mash together a new universe whenever he wants. Clockwork compared this process to patching up a dam, and throughout the story, the Dark Danny Clockwork fusion was creating several localized time disruptions which only eventually affected the whole universe after a prolonged period of time via a chain reaction, and these disruptions, which is what Clockwork was trying to patch, were described as atomic bomb level. A more grounded interpretation of Clockwork’s feat would be compressing what part of the timestream we actually know he affected, which is planetary in scale. However, Yusuke was scaling to the planetary Power Sphere back when he was B-Class. The differences between spirit classes is somewhat nebulous, however Yusuke was able to match Sensui's Sacred Energy increase which was over 10 times stronger than Yusuke by using his demonic energy. Kurama was able to increase his total demon power by 80 times by transforming into Yoko Kurama, Hiei was unable to deal any damage to Sensui when he was an A-Class, Yusuke and Sensui were powerful enough to spirit crush A-Classes, and Yusuke is an upper S-Class. Let's also not forget that the Ecto Skeleton doesn't last very long, and it decreases in power the longer Danny is in it.
But still, what if we did say that Danny could scale to universal levels of power? Surely, that is far beyond anything that happens in Yu Yu Hakusho, right? Well, not exactly. Believe it or not, Yusuke has the means to match such a power level. According to Koenma, the Spirit World has no means of fighting an S-Class demon. In the official dub, he even specifies that his father King Enma cannot do anything to fight them, and that is notable, because King Enma was once able to destroy the entire Netherworld, which is its own entire dimension. In Yu Yu Hakusho, these realms are referred to as parallel planes of existence to the main universe, similar to the faces of a die, and the Netherworld is the counterside of the Demon World where they balance each other. If the Netherworld is thus similar in scale to the other dimensions, then that means that King Enma was able to destroy an entire universe. Even if you argued the Ghost Zone is infinite because of Skulker's statement, Koenma said the same thing about the Demon World, which the Netherworld would be comparable to. Because of the aforementioned gaps in power, Yusuke would still be significantly stronger than Danny, no matter what end you use. Yusuke takes the edge in raw power.
Speed is another matter, however. Both Danny and Yusuke have shown to be incredibly quick when it counts, and with similar leeway to both, both of their spectral energy blasts can be considered light and would move as fast as light. However, looking at when Hiei dodged a Spirit Gun, he did it notably faster than any instance of someone from Danny Phantom evading the ecto rays, and that was back when Hiei was a D-Class. Applying multipliers and upscaling methods to it, you could get Yusuke up to hundreds, possibly thousands of times the speed of light.
However, Danny isn't done yet. Recall that he was able to battle with Johnny 13 while he was using his motorcycle. This motorcycle is able to travel extremely fast and was able to take Danny from Pariah's Keep to his own portal, which is described as being on the other side of the Ghost Zone by Danny. Danny has also traveled to Pariah's Keep from his own portal before. It is somewhat vague what the actual distance is, but Danny described Pariah's Keep as being on the other side of the Ghost Zone relative to his home portal, which would mean it has to be some degree of vast interstellar distances. Even with multipliers and upscaling, the gap here is way too big to assume that Yusuke can match it, Danny is just way too fast, and the Ecto Skeleton increases it further by 100x.
(Note, there are some potential arguments for Yu Yu Hakusho to reach such speed levels for Danny Phantom. Botan travels between Spirit World and Human World by means of physical flight, Koenma suggested that Yusuke's Spirit Gun to Genkai did reach the Spirit World, and Yakumo absorbed energy from the Human World to his place of sealing, which could be translated as a Dark Universe. However, these are less solid and explicit than Danny's own arguments.)
With this massive gap in speed, Yusuke is going to have a lot of trouble trying to tag him, even with his strength advantage. Danny takes the advantage in speed.
When it comes to skill, neither of them are slouched. They are both tricky fighters who can analyze their opponents strengths and weaknesses and use the environment to their advantage, so neither of them could rely on that alone to win the day. They both also have a relative amount of experience fighting the paranormal, and they have both beaten more experienced opponents than themselves. However, Yusuke is far more skilled in direct combat. Yusuke has undergone actual training to fight and harness his spiritual power under Genkai and in the Demon World, while Danny was mostly self taught, and the kinds of guys that Yusuke has beaten and matched in skill before like Sensui are leagues above people like Skulker when it comes to skill.
Most importantly however, is that Yusuke is specifically experienced at taking down opponents like Danny. He has faced opponents that are too fast for him to tag before and opponents that can duplicate, which means it is totally feasible that he could think of ways to eventually land enough hits to win. Danny hasn't really fought anyone quite like Yusuke in contrast, so I feel that Yusuke is going to have an easier time adapting to Danny than vice versa. Because of this, Yusuke wins in skill.
When it comes to their abilities however, Danny outclasses Yusuke pretty easily. Yusuke has a little more than people think, but Danny has quite a bit more. Both can become invisible and intangible and possess others, but Yusuke can only do this when he becomes a ghost, which is harder to achieve compared to Danny for what should be obvious reasons. Yusuke can see and interact with invisible and intangible ghosts, though Danny's intangibility is still an advantage for mobility and area control. Danny also has more offensive and defensive options, can freeze Yusuke, and his several gadgets from the Fentons provide an additional versatility edge to Danny's side.
These gadgets are especially notable because they can weaken ghostly energy, like spiritual energy, and even shut it off completely for three hours. This has the potential to severely debilitate Yusuke, and can be major tools in the fight. Yusuke is able to heal himself from some pretty serious injuries, but Danny can regenerate from being reduced to a puddle of goop, and potentially more if you scaled him to other ghosts. This means that Danny can stay in the battle and survive a few hits from Yusuke despite the power disparity. Overshadowing and his ability to remove souls from their bodies is also incredibly useful, as they are methods Danny has of harming Yusuke while ignoring his durability, and the Thermos could seal souls. Abilities goes to Danny Phantom.
With his advantage in abilities and his already established speed advantage, Danny could potentially score a win under the right circumstances, but there is one more thing we have to get to, and that is their spirit - both literally and metaphorically.
While Danny can overshadow Yusuke, it is worth noting that overshadowing in Danny Phantom has been resisted in the past by a strong enough willpower. Yusuke himself has been able to resist Hiei's mind control, so he should be able to resist overshadowing by similar means - but, Danny has won control of overshadowing over Poindexter, who was previously able to overcome Danny's own resistance, and he has overshadowed Vlad Plasmius before - BUT, Yusuke has resisted the possession of Raizen, one of the most powerful demons in the Demon World. I don't think it would be quite accurate to gauge a difference here between layers, overcoming things like mind control and possession in these series is the classic deal of one's willpower being able to override another's control of yourself, so we need to find out who has greater willpower.
Danny is really determined, but he doesn't always last super long before returning to his human form and his pain tolerance is impressive, but not especially notable compared to Yusuke withstanding the energy of a star that was ripping his body apart for several hours. Yusuke also has far greater stamina - Danny's best showcase of this is being able to fight for a full day, but Yusuke was able to fight Yomi for 60 hours straight, way beyond what Danny can do. Yusuke has pushed through more things and has come back from the brink of death on multiple occasions, his willpower is obviously much greater than Danny's, and his stamina is enough to outlast the Plasmius Maximus's time limit of three hours and overstay the Ecto Skeleton's limits, which cause Danny to faint upon overuse.
As for trying to drag out Yusuke's soul… Well, Yusuke has technically resisted this before. Toguro's aura was able to extract souls and move them towards himself to absorb, but Yusuke was able to not only resist this but erect a barrier protecting others from such effects occurring in the first place. Danny was able to remove Valerie's angry emotion from her body and depower her, so theoretically he may be able to do the same to Yusuke. However, remember the context of this in Danny Phantom. In that specific instance, what Danny removed was a ghost that had been reduced to its base components, an array of emotions that went on to possess Valerie. In Danny Phantom, spiritual matter and emotions are one and the same, and emotions fuel spiritual energy. In Yu Yu Hakusho, it actually works in a really similar way. Spiritual energy is intrinsically tied to one's own emotions, which is why spirits are dependent on their own emotions to use their powers. In that Toguro instance, what Yusuke erected was literally a barrier of his own emotions that protected others from soul extraction and spiritual attacks. Yusuke has also been able to restore his own energy by clearing his mind of thought and thereby increasing the power of his soul and spiritual energy. Yusuke's emotions are connected to his spiritual power in the same way that Danny's are.
Finally, we should discuss sacred energy, because it is actually pretty circumstantially useful here. Sacred Energy is unable to be shut down or nullified by outside forces, such as the Plasmius Maximus, and it also protected Sensui from sealing by Koenma's ring. Given this, it is entirely feasible that Yusuke could resist the Thermos and his ghost energy nullifying gadgets, leaving Danny with very few options to actually take down Yusuke.
(Note, there are a few other Fenton gadgets that may pose a threat to Yusuke and bypass durability, but Danny does not carry them around and they are too circumstantial to consider for the majority of scenarios.)
(Also note, Danny could theoretically use the Infimap to trap Yusuke in the Ghost Zone. However, he has never attempted this before, and the Ghost Zone opening locations are completely random. This would leave Danny at serious risk, considering that he needs to get close to Yusuke for a prolonged period of time.)
Also, I know that it is pretty lame, but Yusuke's spiritual energy is able to immediately destroy weaker enemies that are close to him, and Danny doesn't really have a good counter to this. Yusuke's spirit, in more ways than one, is too much for Danny to handle.
Danny's immense speed and plethora of abilities and gadgets make him a formidable foe, but Yusuke's power, skill, and unyielding spirit were just too much to overcome in the end. It was only a matter of time before Yusuke had the moment he needed to make Danny go ghost.
The winner is Yusuke Urameshi.

Just want to start off with a hearty thank you for being here, it was nice.
So, Danny vs Yusuke, fittingly coinciding with that other Yusuke matchup happening soon. While the rivalry isn’t nearly as deep, the thematics are still there, and the matchup is really neat. Cartoons vs anime isn’t a super common media pairing, anyway.
I’m not really gonna have tags for these comparisons, it’s just gonna be going through one by one, starting with stats (since that’s the primary thing Yusuke focuses on).
In terms of strength, Danny is definitely on the higher end of more “grounded” characters. He typically takes on threats that attempt to destroy entire towns and cities, and usually comes out on top. Being able to match up to top-level ghosts like Aragon, Undergrowth, and Vortex means he should scale to feats at least in the range of 2 kilotons to 1.5 megatons of TNT. Very impressive…
But ultimately falling short of the Spirit Detective. Even as early as the Dark Tournament, Yusuke was capable of outputting 15 kilotons worth of damage with his final Reigun. Initially, below Vortex’s feat, but consider that Yusuke was grappling with B class fighters at this point. The series establishes a very clear hierarchy between classes, with a lone S class fighter being able to solo an army of 500 A classes without breaking a sweat. Applying that sort of logic down to an A class vs a B class, and Yusuke can more than make up for the gap in stats, as Yusuke is currently an upper S class fighter, with the exact same gap of AP stomping between upper and lower S classes, as demonstrated by the fight between Mazoku/Raizen possessed Yusuke and Sensui. This isn’t even Yusuke’s limit either.
As previously mentioned, Sensui was utterly demolished by Yusuke, who matches that level of power normally by the end of the series. Sensui’s power was such that merely existing caused enormous harm to the planet, a feat that requires at least teratons worth of power, if not petatons. This level of power is also fairly consistent, as Yusuke around the era of Dark Tournament could absorb the spirit orb, a ball of energy consistently compared to a tiny sun in terms of energy output. Even just factoring the luminosity, that’s also in the range of 7.17 petatons. And finally, the clash between Yusuke and Yomi, which Yusuke did while in a heavily stamina-drained state, gets 4 Zettatons to 40 Yottatons of TNT. Completely dumpstering Danny.
What about the mid-ends? Well, Danny does get a substantial boost, getting up to baseline planet level (59.44 zettatons) to 10 Yottatons of TNT off the ghost writer…which still ultimately loses to base Yusuke. And this is without factoring in the high end of the spirit orb, using the GBE of a tiny star and getting into the double digit quettatons range of power (that’s about a million times greater than the ghost writer, which Yusuke would also upscale a lot from). Even adding in the 100x amp from the ecto skeleton, it wouldn’t make a difference. And the Ecto Skeleton slowly kills Danny as he uses it!
Finally, we get up to the absolute most cosmic levels, and this is where Danny potentially can swerve back into the fight. With the Ghost Zone being at minimum a universal+ structure, with potential to be over 1 million x universal due to the existence of different space-time continuums and realms within, Danny would theoretically be able to match Yusuke’s best scaling to the Netherworld, an infinite space holding up at least 2 different space-time continuums. However, this is only in theory.
For starters, it’s not actually confirmed all of the different timestreams in the Ghost Zone are different universes. Actually, none of the realms we see in Danny Phantom are known to be universes besides the human realm, which obviously doesn’t exist in the Ghost Zone, so it would be inconsistent for the timestreams to be. This lowers the overall size of the ghost zone dramatically, as not having universal space-time continuums means the amount of universal+ constructs is diminished. To be charitable, the realm is likely 2x universal+, factoring in all of the different space-time pieces of ghost zone realms, and the overarching bulk space of the Ghost Zone, which puts Danny maxing out at 3x uni+, about on par with Yusuke. But again, we hit a problem, in that the only surefire way for Danny to scale to the Ghost Zone is through his fight with Dark Danny/Clockwork, who was collapsing the dimension over time via atomic bomb level reality implosions, meaning Danny can’t scale to the full ghost zone cosmology through Dark Danny. Ultimately, Danny could probably scale, but it would require many attacks on his part, whereas Yusuke scales with just his standard attacks due to matching a threat who could destroy the Netherworld with *no* overtime component. Basically, Danny needs a thousand cuts to reach infinity, Yusuke needs like 2-3, just as a hypothetical. Overall, no matter how you cut it, Yusuke is stronger, by a significant degree. And while Danny can mitigate the gap with his accelerated development, which allows him to get strong enough to win a power struggle over an opponent who no-sold his punches a few minutes earlier, Yusuke also has AD to even it out, while upscaling WAY more from his feats.
Speed is a somewhat different story. Danny in season 3 could dodge ghost rays, which are put around 2x lightspeed. Yusuke, at the very beginning of the series, matched Hiei, who could dodge the spirit gun at over 28x lightspeed. Not only does Yusuke do more upscaling, with class gaps also leading to speedblitz gaps, but Danny’s only shot at closing the gap, the Ecto Skeleton, is heavily non-standard and drains Danny of stamina, which isn’t good for reasons we’ll get to.
That said, Danny is not capped at just low faster than light speeds. His numerous trips crossing the ghost zone, an infinite space and a definitive universe, as well as matching the speed of enemies who also do these traversals, easily puts Danny at speeds over 17 million x lightspeed, and even up into the range of 12 quadrillion c, which is far, FAR faster than Yusuke. Unlike the cosmic power levels, this range of speed is fairly consistent for top tier ghosts in Danny’s world, so I feel more comfortable saying Danny is much faster.
Durability is largely the same as strength, with the exception that Danny can regenerate from tiny pieces or even full body destruction, albeit up to a certain point. While this does keep him in the fight longer, it’s established that enough strain on a ghost’s ectoplasm form leaves them unable to regenerate for a considerable time length, likely enough to count as a loss, as seen with Kitty or Johnny’s Shadow.
So, Danny is likely not going to win in a contest of outmuscling. But with his speed advantage, could he win with his abilities?
Well, for most of them, the answer is no. Most of Danny’s standard abilities have some counter. Soul removal? Yusuke puts up a barrier for his soul that blocks Younger Toguro’s attempt at the same ability. Regeneration negating ice? Yusuke’s aura likely blocks it, and the ice isn’t absolute zero or anything that would prevent Yusuke from breaking out. Possession? Negatory, Yusuke spirit can do all the same actions as his body and would just fight off Danny, who’s overshadowing has been negated by strong inner power in the past. Sealing? Not only does Danny not like to do it anymore, but sacred energy blocks users from being sealed. It also doesn’t help that Yusuke can both see and touch Danny when he’s intangible, as he automatically skips DP ghosts’ natural intangibility to human world items due to being a spirit warrior, and can touch intangible threats on top of that.
However, there are a few options that Danny has, in theory, to close the gap.
First is the Fenton Atomizer, which takes ghosts and reduces them down to their most basic components. In Danny Phantom, this is represented by the raw emotions that make up a ghost at their core, beyond their mind and their ectoplasmic bodies. Since Yu Yu Hakusho follows a similar idea of emotions surrounded by a spiritual body, it’s possible the atomizer could reduce Yusuke to a level where he cannot fight back, and can only try to possess Danny, which the latter counters by just flying away. Sadly, Danny never actually used the atomizer, as Valerie stole it and was its primary user throughout the novel.
Second is the Ecto Bazooka. While in most appearances the bazooka is merely a strong weapon, in its debut appearance the Fentons modified the weapons with a built-in portal maker, instantly sucking anyone in range into the ghost zone. It doesn’t even have to be a direct hit, as long as it’s within a couple feet of the target.
The problem here is that, while Danny has used ecto bazookas, none of the bazookas he (or any of the Fenton family) used after the debut episode have portal making abilities. It’s possible they still exist and are just not used, but it’s doubtful, and thus not the best wincon.
The third option is using the Fenton Crammer. With this tool, Yusuke would immediately be shrunk to a size smaller than a sweatdrop, which in context of the scene would make Yusuke about .03 inches tall. Yusuke is 5’8”, so he would become about 2267x smaller. It’s not exactly clear how much weaker he’d become, but when Danny was shrunken he was put at a level where even ordinary golf balls and mice would have been gravely dangerous. On top of that, if Yusuke was hit his spiritual powers would begin to fail one by one, making Yusuke less able to attack. This is probably Danny’s best option for closing the strength gap, but there are some problems.
For one, even assuming that Yusuke would actually become over 2260x weaker from this, he would still end up stronger than Danny at most ends. If anything, Yusuke now becomes a much harder target to hit, and his AOE would still be at a level where he could fully encompass Danny. Second, while Yusuke’s spiritual abilities would end up shutting down, his sacred energy would stay intact, as nothing in Danny Phantom has been shown to negate outright holy power. So Yusuke would still be able to fire off attacks from that energy source.
Finally, Danny has only ever used the Crammer in one episode. While he did use it to shrink Dash out of annoyance, it’s debatable if he would run through his options in time to think of the Crammer, and also be in a situation where he could go and retrieve the Crammer if he thought of it. If the fight takes place in a neutral setting where Danny cannot retrieve all his Fenton Works gear, this strategy is sunk. Still, this is definitely Danny’s best overall win condition, as it facilitates his last strategy.
With Danny’s overwhelming travel and reaction speed advantage, it’s possible that Danny can just…drag Yusuke out of the arena and leave him somewhere he can’t return from. This is something Danny did, once, when he kicked Vlad out of his house, but is overall something he doesn’t tend to rely on. Even then, Danny needs to do this quickly before Yusuke obliterates him with any attack.
When analyzing all these options, it’s pretty clear Danny is playing a huge game of mental gymnastics here. He definitely *has* options to win, but they’re reliant on specific one-off gear he has barely any experience with. So let’s see if Danny’s tertiaries can help him-
Oh.
In terms of raw combat skill, Yusuke cleans up without difficulty. Danny is…fairly clever in battle, coming up with strategies like diffusing his ghost ray through a magnifier, or thinking to use Vortex’s powers against him, but by and large Danny is a brawler who sticks to his powers to win. It doesn’t really compete with Yusuke getting into hand to hand scraps all the time and constantly using the environment to get the upper hand, even against foes who far exceed him in speed. Granted, none of those characters were *as* fast as Danny, but the idea of someone blitzing him is not new to Yusuke. And while there are characters in Danny Phantom who are 9th degree black belts, Danny is not one of them. He’s just adept at weaponry, and not much beyond that. Vlad defeating a squad of Ming warriors also likely doesn’t contribute much, seeing as Vlad is blatantly superhuman with magic powers.
As for intelligence, while Danny is probably more book smart than Yusuke due to his ability to understand utilize complex equipment, land space shuttles, and pass difficult english tests with only a couple hours of study, book smarts don’t really translate much to a fight like this, where all Yusuke needs to be is smart enough to know how to kick Danny’s teeth in. It doesn’t help that Danny very consistently fails to understand easy solutions to problems, like how he didn’t figure out he could “wish” for Desiree to be defeated until he had already beat her, didn’t figure out a doctor was an assistant to a ghost despite the doctor giving his name (which was extremely similar to the name of said assistant), and gets caught off guard by his overconfidence against other ghosts and ghost fighters repeatedly. Generally, he needs to be told outright of specific information in order for him to put the pieces together, like Undergrowth having to tell him the weather was warm outside for Danny to think of the solution of making it snow with freeze powers. This isn’t really good, when his win condition relies on him dodging everything and using one specific tool.
As for stamina, Yusuke again takes this. Danny may have been able to fight ghosts for 24 hours, but Yusuke has fought Yomi for 60 hours straight. The best feats of stamina Danny can scale to after that are Kitty possessing Paulina for several days straight, and Danielle being able to will herself away from being reduced to goo after a period of weeks. The important thing to note, though, is that neither of these examples involved fighting, merely just walking around. Danny also does not have any arguments for infinite stamina that full ghosts have, as he has gotten tired from fighting before, and has dropped out of ghost form in the process. While his human form can somewhat keep up in stats with his ghost form, he loses many abilities like regeneration, which were critical to keeping him in the fight. The regeneration, while stronger than Yusuke’s, drains Danny’s stamina further if he takes many hits from ectoplasmic entities, and thus would not hold up long from repeated attacks from Yusuke. When Danny did actually have a direct fight with someone that was his superior in combat, be it Vlad, Pariah, Vortex, and so on, he either loses immediately or barely wins after a period of several minutes.
Overall, it’s definitely not impossible for Danny to win this fight. The idea of using the Fenton Crammer on Yusuke and then removing him from the battlefield is something that can work. But when considering this one singular esoteric wincon, by a fighter who is consistently bad at thinking of esoteric win conditions on his own and preferring a straight brawl, it is probably safer to side with the fighter who is consistently stronger, more durable, resists most of Danny’s relevant abilities, and is a more skilled fighter. Yusuke’s kit, while more limited, is here a case of being in the right place at the right time.
Danny just didn’t stand…a ghost of a chance…hue hue hue, you don’t need a detective to deduce the winner here, it’s Yusuke.

I have not done an individual verdict in forever so it feels weird to do one of these again. Firstly, thanks to TMK for letting me be a part of this. I’m always game for some Yu Yu Hakusho discussions. That said, it’s time to be a ghostbuster and determine who is going to die. Both have their own share of advantages that are nothing to laugh at. Danny has a greater pool of items and abilities that he can utilize while Yusuke is the far more skilled fighter, has greater area of effects on his moves and has superior stamina. Both are also capable of creating barriers for defense and flight as well so the fight itself is going to come down to stats and how some of their abilities interact with one another.
While Danny does have more abilities going for him, a lot of them do not work on Yusuke. Danny trying to pluck his spirit out wouldn’t work because Yusuke himself can fight as a spirit and still do all his normal moves, meaning Danny would be putting himself in a dangerous range. Trying to possess Yusuke also doesn’t work because Yusuke has resisted possession before from Raizen. Sacred Energy can also block out any attempts at trying to seal Yusuke. Ice powers could be of help but that depends if Danny is potent enough for it to be effective, since Hiei was able to break out of Seiryu’s ice, which is stated to be close to absolute zero and Yusuke’s certainly comparable enough to him. Danny’s own invisibility and intangibility also don’t help him out much because Yusuke would still be capable of interacting with him anyways thanks to his spiritual awareness. Some of Danny’s items can offer a workaround such as shrinking but these are things he’s not going to resort to or are things he just has never really used before.
Ultimately, stats are going to be the way the fight is decided. Speed-wise, both can be argued to be argued to a degree of faster than light speeds, being fair to both Ghost Ray and Spirit Gun dodging. The difference is that Hiei dodging that Spirit Gun blast from up close is still faster, it was done very early in the series and Yusuke would massively be upscaling this by the end of the series, meaning Yusuke would greatly be outspeeding Danny since this would be 2c vs massively upscaling 28c. Even with the boost from the Ecto Skeleton, Yusuke still has his Mazoku state to increase his speed and can grow stronger and faster mid-fight. Now Danny does have arguments to get some speeds that would absolutely get speeds faster than anything in Yu Yu Hakusho but the validity of these speed feats can be put into contention depending how you want to view certain feats like Ghost Zone crossing.
That just leaves Power as the deciding factor and in this instance, Yusuke completely dominates Danny in this category. Whether sticking to lower ends or higher ends, more often that not, Yusuke eclipses Danny in power and most of Yusuke’s feats of power are done when in his base and oftentimes, he would be massively upscaling a lot of his feats as well. Danny’s Ecto Skeleton could be argued to close the gap but then there’s Yusuke’s Mazoku state and Sacred Energy to widen the gap again. And too much damage can revert Danny back to his regular human state, making it much easier for Yusuke to deal the final blow. Even if you wanted to argue something silly as Danny trying to just carry Yusuke into outer space, that would be putting him very up close and dangerous where at that point, Yusuke just needs to release some of his Energy to completely vaporize Danny.
Danny certainly had some advantages of his own, but Yusuke’s resistances and raw power ultimately caught this ghost for good. The winner is Yusuke Urameshi

Oh $_^&! I was expecting Danny to clear this, but my man Yusuke really pulled through!
ReplyDeleteA few questions though: Why was the Dub included, doesn't Danny phasing into other ghosts counter Yusuke being able to interact with him, and wasn't Yusuke's "sacred energy" described as something entirely new or whatever?
More importantly though, you didn't explain how Danny could counter Yusuke's fake ear. YOU CAN'T JUST BRUSH THIS OFF, WE NEED TO KNOW!! IT COULD DECIDE THE WHOLE MATCH!
OK, wait, what exactly do you mean by Selene? Like, what's her team here?
